SFC Sec B
Athlone 1-9 Caulry 0-15
Our senior team suffered their second defeat in this year's championship when they were defeated by a hungrier Caulry team in perfect conditions in Moate on Sunday afternoon.  This was a bad day at the office for Athlone, who never matched the level of performance they'd shown in earlier rounds, and who lost team captain Noel Mulligan to concussion and county player John Egan to a late red card.

Athlone struggled in attack in the first half and had only points from frees by Noel Mulligan and Mickey Greene to show for their efforts as they trailed by 0-7 to 0-3 at the break.  The Blues started the second half brighter and points from Mickey Greene and John Connellan reduced  the gap to two points, however Caulry responded well and struck three points in succession to put daylight between the sides again.  A Charlie McMickan point and a Jack Quinn goal, after excellent interplay with Daniel Reid, left just the minimum between them again, but Athlone were unable to bridge the gap as Caulry finished stronger and added further points to leave three points between them at the final whistle.

Footnote:  The game was marred by two lengthy delays caused by injuries to Athlone's Noel Mulligan and Caulry's Robbie Hickey so we'd like to wish both players a speedy recovery and also to thank all the medical personnel who tended to them so diligently.

Athlone:  Conor Devaney, Eoin Maher, Damo Kelly, Fergal Murray, Noel Mulligan (0-2), Paul Bannon, Tom Egan, Alan Gaughan, Jordan Marshment, Stephen Ward, Sam Omukoro, John Egan, Michael Greene (0-4), John Stapleton, Daniel Reid  Subs Used:  Matthew Darling, Jack Quinn (1-0), John Connellan (0-2), Charlie McMickan (0-1), Joe Fallon.

Minor Championship Group 2
Athlone 5-11 Shannon Gaels 1-6
Athlone's minor boys' team finished the group stage of the championship with a 100% record after an impressive win over Shannon Gaels in Páirc Chiaráin.  Athlone got off to a great start with early goals from Robert Teape and Donagh Prendergast and points from Tadhg Prendergast and Daniel Reid, before the visitors brought themselves back into the game with three points in a row.  Sean Dowd then struck a quickfire 1-2 to leave Athlone 11 points clear, although it did take a couple of goal line clearances from John Duddy and James Finlass to stop Gaels grabbing a couple of goals of their own in this period.  Shannon Gaels did eventually find the back of the net when a short kick-out went awry, but the home side finished the half with a point from corner-back Paddy McGettigan to lead by 3-6 to 1-4 at the break.

Just as in the first half, Athlone got off to a dream start in the second with points from Benny Martin and Daniel Reid and a superb solo goal from JJ Offorjama, however Shannon Gaels refused to give in and it took a string of great saves from John Duddy to prevent them adding to their goal tally.  Instead the next three-pointer came from Sean Dowd as Athlone finally put the game beyond their opponents and further points from Shane Allen, Tadhg Prendergast and Anthony Johnson left Athlone victorious on a scoreline of 5-11 to 1-6.

Athlone now play Shandonagh in the championship Division 1 quarter-final in Shandonagh at 6.30pm this Wednesday (31st).

Athlone:  John Duddy, James Finlass, Diarmuid Martin, Patrick McGettigan (0-1), Robert Teape (1-0), Eoin Fahey, David Cleary, Danny Reid (0-2), Shane Allen (0-1), Joseph Offorjama (1-0), Donagh Prendergast (1-0), Sean Dowd (2-2), Benny Martin (0-1), Tadhg Prendgergast (0-3), Anthony Johnson (0-1)  Subs:  Aaron Forde, Enda Tynan Daly, Niall Doolan, Bryan N'Cube, Deba Okodugha
