Ballinagore GAA Notes

Intermediate Football Championship
Ballinagore 0-15 Ballynacargy 0-12
We squared up to old rivals, Ballynacargy, in a winner takes all clash to avoid the relegation zone on Wednesday evening in a balmy Cusack Park. Thankfully we were able to recall the services of a few players who had missed our previous two games but we were still down a number of players so we required a massive performance to pull us through. Ballynacargy got the perfect start and they were three points to the good after seven minutes as we looked really sluggish coming to terms with the pace of the game and the warm evening. A fisted Darren Rigney point seemed to settle us and we had drawn level by the half way mark. We soon got ourselves in front with shots from Brandon Carey, Tommy McDaniel and Eoin Miller again finding the target. Eoin's shot could easily have been a green flag if he had managed to keep it a bit lower as he was put through on goal nicely by Tommy McDaniel. Fortunately for us, Ballynacargy were wayward in their shot selection and they were guilty of a number of poor wides. We lead by 0-09 to 0-06 at half time. Neither side threatened greatly at the start of the second half, but when the scores started to come, it was ourselves that began to find the range again. We had opened up a comfortable 0-14 to 0-09 lead after twenty minutes and things began to look promising. However, Ballynacargy dismantled the kitchen sink and proceeded to fire it straight at us for the remainder of the game. Two pointed frees brought them back into contention. We seemed to retreat into defence at bit to maintain our lead and our lads soaked up a lot of pressure forcing Bal into a number of speculative shots which were dealt with by determined Ballinagore defenders or drifted wide. We had opportunities ourselves on the counter attack but we kicked some poor wides which left our supporters on a knifes edge with the clock ticking down. A fabulous Tommy McDaniel free in injury time put three points between us again and with a draw being enough to guarantee our safety, we breathed a sigh of relief which turned into a great outpouring of celebration moments later as the final whistle blew. This was a tremendous performance, full of bravery, heart and skill by our lads and despite us not reaching the knockout stages, we continue to show signs of progress. We want to acknowledge the efforts a number of players made to get to this game with some players giving up time on holidays to travel back and others travelling long distances from work and college to be in Mullingar for a midweek fixture. We also want to wish our opponents, Ballynacargy, the very best of luck as they fight for their intermediate status in their next game. Team: Cathal Daly, James Sheerin, Enda Claffey, Kieran Deegan, David Keegan, Michael Ennis, Ciaran Carey, Niall Kelly, Brandon Carey, Cathal Ennis, Tommy McDaniel, Darren Rigney, Cormac Deegan, Eoin Miller, Enda Kenny. Subs used: Paddy Doody, Paddy Ennis, James Durkan.

Lilliput Gaels U16
Hard luck to Lilliput Gaels U16 footballers who lost out to a strong Millmore Gaels side in their final group game in Ballinagore. While we were beaten by a quality side on the night, we could have been a lot closer at the end as we made a lot of basic errors in our play and were guilty of some poor shooting. Nothing that can't be rectified on the training field though fairly quickly. They now await the draw for the Division 2 quarter final.

U14 Football Championship
Lilliput Gaels 3-13 Tyrrellspass 6-18
Our U14 footballers travelled the short distance to Tyrrellspass to face the locals in this Division 2 Championship game this evening. We played well in the first half and both sides were trading scores evenly for the first twenty minutes but Tyrrellspass got their noses in front to lead 3-09 to 2-06 at the break. Goals win games and unfortunately for us, Tyrrellspass, who were very strong down the centre, scored three more in the second period. Otherwise this was a very fine and closely contested game between two good sides. We've suffered a few defeats now but this team is very competitive in every game they play and it's only a matter of time before we start getting back to winning ways. Team: Peter Dalton, Mark Killian, Ryan Boyne, Mark Kiernan, Tiernan McMahon, Jack O'Donnell, Luke Seery, Darragh Seery, Cian Gavigan, Warric Kirby, David Jackson, Conor Murphy, Cathal Kelly, Peter Reynolds, Sean Kincaid. Subs used: David Seery, Ian Kiernan.
