Attitude impresses Walsh

One of the things to strike Westmeath coach Michael Walsh about the county's hurlers was their attitude, according to the man himself.

Walsh has been part of the Westmeath set up since late 2014 and although he admits that there is still plenty of work to be done, the two-time All-Ireland winner feels that they are heading in the right direction.

"I was hugely impressed with the set-up when I arrived," he told the Westmeath Examiner. "Of course there is always room for improvement, but the players' attitudes have been very, very good.

"I have had very enjoyable times in Westmeath. There is a great backroom team in place. Michael (Ryan) is doing a terrific job and he never looks for credit, always deflecting it on to others.

"The structures are in place for us to progress. I really hope that the county board will see this as a long term project.

"We need to look at the bigger picture and it is vital that we get out of Division 2A next year. We would come on leaps and bounds if we were hurling in Division 1B. They must ask Michael back when the season ends."

Westmeath begin their All-Ireland SHC qualifier campaign this weekend when they host Limerick at TEG Cusack Park on Saturday evening.
