Junior Championship
St Lomans Mullingar 1.12 Athlone 3.06
St Lomans and Athlone played out a thriller in Páirc Chiarán on Friday evening last in the Junior Championship. It looked every bit like a top of the table clash with the game played under proper championship intensity. Some fine scores and hard but fair tackling added spice to the game. St Lomans although looked like they would be winners for the majority of the game will still be happy to come away with the draw after surviving a late avalanche from the home side.
Michael Gleeson who was one of St Lomans best players on the day opened the scoring with a point after been set up by Joe Glennon. Joe Fallon converted two frees to give Athlone the lead after the lively Richie Greene had been fouled on both occasions. A tactical change saw Conor O Donoghue switch to mark Greene and Donoghue eliminated the threat from Athlone's corner forward. Indeed the home side remained scoreless for the remainder of the half.
David Morgan who excelled in midfield drew the team's level before Michael Gleeson looked to have restored the blues advantage only for his effort to be deemed wide of the post. St Lomans did eventually take the lead with a Johnny Mee point from distance. Mikey Scally and Conor Matthews combined well to set up James Cox and the wing forward coolly sent a shot to the bottom corner of the net. Niall Mc Gurran, Mikey Scally and Mark Browne all added points to leave the blues seven points to the good at the break.
Joe Fallon and James Cox traded scores early in the second half before Mickey Greene sent an unstoppable shot to the roof of the St Lomans net to start a comeback charge from the home side. St Lomans added three points but two goals in two minutes from Athlone levelled the game. The loss of the experienced Tommy Lambden didn't help St Lomans cause. At this stage the momentum was all with the southsiders and but for two wonderful James Mc Kenna saves they would have added further goals.
St Lomans regained their composure and battled hard in the closing stages. Niall Mc Gurran and David Morgan added points but two points from Joe Fallon including a free deep into injury time meant both teams had to settle for a share of the points.

U14 Boys
St Lomans U14's travelled to the GAA Games Development centre in Abbottstown, Co Dublin on Saturday to take part in the Regional Feile competition. In our group were Clonakilty Co Cork, Ballymote Co Sligo and Sean Stinsons from Antrim.
Games were fifteen minutes per half and a slow start saw us the wrong side of a 0.05 to 0.03 result in the first game. The lads kicked two 21 yard frees wide and hit the crossbar which prompted the referee to comment after that "you left that one behind"
In the second game we played a physically bigger Ballymote team and worked hard to secure a 2:6 to 1:3 victory.
Having lost one and won one and with the way other games finished our final group game V Sean Stinsons the scenario was win for a place in the final or lose and go home. Again we met a physically bigger team that had easily won both their first two games. The lads gave it everything and when the final whistle went we had a lot of tired and some battered players but we were on the right side of a 3:6 to 3:2 score line.
So when scores were added up St Lomans were in the final against the team they had just beaten by four points. Ten minutes of a break and we were away again but our lads had given so much to make the final that we conceded two goals early on and in a fifteen minute half we struggled to claw that back while most lads were out on their feet. This was a huge effort by this group of players who gave everything.
The team were presented with their runner up medals and complemented on the way they represented their club on the day. We togged out 24 players, 16 of which are U14 again next year. Well done to all involved!

Condolences
It was with great sadness and regret that on Saturday June 18th we learned of the passing of our friend and clubman Gerry Walsh after a long illness. Gerry was involved with the club for many years and his roles included coaching while also serving as club secretary for a number of years. He remained an avid supporter of the club right up until his passing. Gerry was held in very high esteem and this was evident by the attendance at his removal and funeral. The club extends its deepest sympathy to his wife Eithne and family. Ar dheis de go raibh se.
The club also offers its condolences to the O Keeffe Family following the passing of Francie Kearney, Castlerea, Co Roscommon. Ar dheis de go raibh se.
