Mullingar Shamrocks club notes

June 27, 2016

Congrats

Well done to Karen Hegarty and panellists Tara Fagan and Niamh Spellman on their Leinster Ladies Football championship victory against Laois; also to selector Pearse Corroon, players Killian Daly and Denis Corroon and panellists Patrick Fagan and Daragh Daly on their contribution to Westmeath's historic Leinster semi-final win against Kildare. The wins set-up repeats of last year's Leinster finals in both codes. History mighty have been made at Croke Park but Westmeath supporters were thin on the ground to witness the occasion. Surely this was the most poorly supported Westmeath team ever to contest a Leinster semi-final. Westmeath fully deserved their single point victory; 0-6 behind after 42 minutes, the team was forced to abandon the futile and static cross-field passing and attacked with purpose and scored 1-6 without a Kildare response until deep into injury time when Kildare managed 0-2 from frees.

Unfortunately Carole Finch and her under-16 Westmeath team were beaten by Louth in their Leinster final. Conor O'Brien's remarkable journey with the Ireland under-20 rugby team also ended in defeat to England in the final. It was a remarkable campaign by Ireland and Conor's contribution was outstanding.

Under-14 Blitz

Our under-14 team travelled to Trim at the weekend to compete in a regional tournament and continued to show the improvement that has been evident in recent weeks. A 1-9 to 1-4 loss to Trim (Sean Óg Hynes 0-3, John Caulfield 1-0, Johnny Joyce 0-1) which eliminated the team from the competition.
