Rounders Championship Round 5

Ballinagore were back in championship action last Thursday evening when we traveled to play Na Fianna in Glasnevin. Having received a walkover from Cork in round 4 we were a little rusty, as we had not played a game since May 12th.

Ballinagore won the toss and opted to field first and on a wet evening our handling let us down on a few occasions. We conceded five runs in the first innings and failed to score ourselves but we reversed the trend in the second, scoring five runs through the Glennon siblings Rachel and Kevin, the Claffey brothers Declan and Enda, with Shane Heraty completing the set. This made it 6-5 in favour of Na Fianna at the top of the third innings. We scored two further runs in the third through Declan Claffey and Aisling Heraty which put us in the lead 7 to 6 with two to play. The fourth saw Declan Claffey complete his hatrick of runs but Na Fianna scored two of their own to tie up the match at 8-8 heading into the fifth and final innings.

The drama continued in the fifth with Na Fianna scoring two further runs before their third batter was out. This left Ballinagore knowing that they needed two runs to secure a tie or three to win. With two batters out and no runs scored, David Langan stood up to the mat to try and secure a draw at least. With a runner on 1st and 2nd base, Langan swung at his last good ball and drove it high and long. His strike was caught out the field which meant a win couldn't be secured but a draw was still achievable. All eyes were on the runners on the bases as they tried to steal home before the fielder returned the ball to home base and put them out. They succeeded in this feat with only seconds to spare, crossing home base just as Langans long drive was returned home. This all made for an exciting finish to a very competitive and enjoyable game and gives Ballinagore another valuable championship point. Thanks to Na Fianna CLG for their hospitality and to our travelling support for giving such great encouragement on the night. Team and Scorers: Aisling Heraty (Catcher, 1 Run), Declan Claffey (Pitcher, 3 Runs), Dympna Claffey Capt.
