Westmeath minor hurling manager Danny Owens believes that there is plenty of work to be done in the county.

Last weekend saw Westmeath cause a major surprise when they defeated Offaly in the Leinster SHC, but the Faithful County came out on top in the minor clash between the sides.

And Owens who is an Offaly native believes that his minor charges need to work on certain areas of their game before they can go to the next level.

Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner he said: "Overall, what I found was that in some of the fundamentals of the game are weak at that level, for example, catching and striking.

"There is a lot of work to do to bring those players forward. I had only a four-month window to work with them and get the fundamentals right.

"The lads tried very hard and I couldn't ask anymore of them. It wasn't to be. Westmeath had a few very strong forwards last year and having good forwards is a must."
