McCormack to become a Westmeath selector

Castlepollard and Westmeath star Darren McCormack

Westmeath hurling manager Michael Ryan is expected to add Darren McCormack to his backroom team.

The Castlepollard clubman, who many rate as the outstanding Westmeath hurler of the last 20 years, will fill one of the selector roles vacated by the trio of Pat Clancy, Eddie Casey and John Kennedy. Ringtown's Adrian Moran has already been confirmed as a selector, while hurling coach and former Kilkenny All-Ireland winning goalkeeper Michael Walsh will also have a greater input into team selections in 2016.

Another change sees former Dublin football captain and manager Tommy Carr take over as strength and conditioning coach from Peter Leahy, who was recently appointed Westmeath minor football manager. Tommy's brother Declan captained Tipperary to All-Ireland hurling glory in 1991.

Meanwhile, new Westmeath U21 football manager Emmett McDonnell has replaced former All Star goalkeeper Gary Connaughton as a senior football selector. John Doran, Pearse Corroon and Mark Kavanagh will remain on as manager Tom Cribbin's other selectors.

McDonnell's selectors at U21 level are Tom Cribbin, Graham O'Connor, Patrick Costello and Steven Cleary.
