MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS

SEMI FINAL

Shandonagh 2-11 The Downs 6-9

This was the final score in a very entertaining and pulsating Minor A Championship semi final played in perfect conditions in Ballynacarrigy on Saturday last.

The scoreline however does not tell the story of the game. It was a game that ebbed and flowed from end to end. Our boys led on many occasions and indeed with only 12 minutes to go, we were two points to the good. However a blitz of goals from the older and more experienced Downs side saw them progress into their second successive final.

From the initial throw in, our young men got stuck into the task at hand. Their committment in defence saw them break down the Downs attack time and time again. Our boys' composure on the ball in attack saw them break down the field to land scores of our own. Goal opportunities appeared with one taken by either side leaving Shandonagh leading by 1-7 to 1-3 at half time.

The Downs restructured at the break and started the second half well with a second goal to which Shandonagh responded with one of their own. The sides exchanged points and the lads with most of the possession ago an opened up a 2 point lead. With 12 minutes remaining.  An unlucky bounce of the ball whilst a Shandonagh player was receiving treatment allowed the Downs to pounce for their third goal. Momentum had now swung in favour of the Black and Ambers who added another 2 goals in quick succession to put the games beyond our young squad.

With most of the squad underage again next year, the future is good for this talented bunch of lads. The coaching team would like to thank the lads for their efforts all year and wish the under 14 boys and under 16 boys well in their up coming final and semi-finals.

QUARTER FINAL

MOATE ALL WHITES 2-8   SHANDONAGH 2-13

Shandonagh minors secured a place in the Minor A Championship semi final with a hard fought but we'll deserved 5 point victoryover Moate in their quarter final on Tuesday evening last.

The game was played in good conditions under lights in Moate Community college.  A determined and focused performance by our young squad produced a memorable win away from home in the rescheduled fixture in front of a big crowd. The atmosphere was great with the tension felt by all.

Shandonagh got the perfect start with a goal in the first minutes but were pinned back as Moate settled into the game and indeed they led by 1-4 to 1-1 after 15 minutes. A second Shandonagh goal produced their first resurgence and we'll taken points meant that the lads lead at half time by 2-5 to 1-4.

Moate began the second half strongly and got a second goal to level the scores at 2-6 each with 20 minutes remaining. However enormous credit is due to the young Shandonagh side who dug deep and played composed football to retain possession and work openings for scores to open up a 5 point lead.  They managed to retain this lead until the final whistle. A big thank you to all who travelled and provided enormous vocal support .
