Senior & Intermediate Hurling Hurling Championships continue apace:
Plenty of action over the past week has seen the competition for places in the knock out stages of the Hurling championships get very keen indeed. The competition for the top four spots in the Slevin Coaches Senior championship certainly has a twist or two before the semi finalists are decided. Clonkill,Raharney and Lough Lene Gaels are on nine points followed by Castletown Geoghegan on eight and Castlepollard on seven. One of those five teams will not make the semi finals so I expect the competition to be intense  in the final round of fixtures on the weekend of the 19/20 September.  At the opposite end of the table, Delvin look to be one of the teams in the relegation game with either  St Oliver Plunketts or St Brigids joining them.  At Intermediate level, Brownstown top the table despite losing their unbeaten run to Ringtown on Friday evening. However, at this point it appears that those two teams along with Crookedwood and Raharney will make the top four though both Clonkill and Castletown Geoghegan still have a shout.
Knock out stages of Football Championships commence:
It's football all the way next weekend with Quarter finals in all three grades of Adult football and relegation finals at Senior and Intermediate level.  The Senior Quarter finals see Castledaly face Killucan and St Lomans Mullingar taking on Coralstown/Kinnegad. Both games are on Saturday 5th September. The relegation final pits Bunbrosna and St Malachys against one another at Kinnegad on Friday evening which along with the other two games should be keenly contested.  The Senior grade has been wide open this year but I'll go with Castledaly,St Lomans Mullingar and Bunbrosna to win though I don't expect much to separate any of the sides.  The Intermediate Quarter finals are on Sunday 6 September with Rosemount V Shandonagh and Tubberclair V Moate All Whites making up an interesting double header at Cusack Park. For what its worth I think Rosemount and Tubberclair will make the step through to the semi finals but like their senior counterparts, the games are likely to be very keenly contested. The relegation final is between Ballinagore and CFCW on Friday evening in Kinnegad. Both sides do not want to be in this situation and a win here will be salvation for a disappointing season for both sides. I'll go with Ballinagore as they do seem to have better form at the moment. At Junior level Kilbeggan Shamrocks face  Mullingar Shamrocks while Ballycomoyle take on Garrycastle with both games on Friday 4 September.  Kilbeggan were expected to get to this stage while Ballycomoyle have been something of a surprise but both teams will harbour good hopes for progression. They both face formidable opponents next Friday evening and the hurdle may be a little steep for both sides against the Senior second strings. There is plenty to look forward to and a great choice of games. Full list of fixtures on www.westmeathgaa.ie
Westmeath GAA Lotto:
The most recent draw was on Tuesday 25th August with no Jackpot winner. The Jackpot now stands at €15120 for the next draw on Tuesday 1st September and it is certainly a prize worth winning.  There were two match three winners of €160 each at the last draw and they were Kate Maher C/O St Oliver Plunketts GAA and Olive & Des Maguire C/O Mullingar Shamrocks GAA

Adrian Murray Cup:
The All Ireland Under 16 B Hurling Championship was hosted by Westmeath on Saturday 29 August with nine counties participating at the three venues across the county. The cup named in honour of the late Adrian Murray who served Westmeath GAA so well before his untimely death almost 10 years ago. Westmeath had high hopes of progress in the competition but were knocked out by neighbours Meath in the semi final. Meath won the competition defeating Donegal in the final at Cusack Park on Saturday evening.
Under 14 B All Ireland success:
Well done to the Westmeath Under 14 Hurlers who claimed the All Ireland B title in Wicklow on Saturday 29 August when they defeated the host county by 4-8 to 2-9 in the final. Westmeath had two squads participating and by virtue of a 2-10 to 0-3 win over Meath followed by a 1-15 to 0-3 win over Tyrone, the Lake county secured their final place with a 6-19 to 1-0 win over Donegal.
Under 15 Hurlers lose to Kildare:
The Under 15 hurling squad lost to Kildare in the final of the Michael Foley Plate competition by 1-10 to 1-3. Held annually in Wexford, the competition is for Development squads and is a very useful  way to prepare underage teams for their future careers at minor level.
Under 16 C Camogie Champions:
We in Westmeath GAA would like to offer our sincere congratulations to the Westmeath Under 16 Camogie team who claimed the All Ireland C Title on Saturday 29 August.  Played at the fine facilities of Iniskeen GAA in Co Monaghan, the Lake County Girls were comprehensive winners over Antrim on a 7-11 to 1-2 scoreline.
Twitter & Facebook:
A club official recently queried the variety of results appearing on our County Twitter & Facebook accounts and to be honest he had a valid point. We do try and acquire as many results as possible which are listed to the said accounts but the variety of games covered is always dependent on our clubs sending in results in a timely fashion. Its not a criticism but a reminder as the sooner the results are forwarded, then the sooner all our supporters can get the required information. The quickest way to get results listed is via our twitter account which is westmeat gaaofficial @westmeath_gaa
