Clann na nGael/Tormey Solicitors Under 10 League:

The Garrycastle Under-10 team journeyed to Johnstown on Thursday to play Clann na nGael in the fourth round of this year's league. Our numbers were somewhat depleted on the evening, but we were able to field two teams, one at under-10 level, and one at under-9 level.

In the Under-10 match, Garrycastle started strongly, and soon had  scores on the board from the industrious Thanh McCay and Diarmaid Murtagh. Some great football all around the pitch saw Garrycastle build out a decent lead mid-way through the first half. As half-time approached, it was the home team's turn to apply the pressure, and they led at the break by three points. As in the first half, Garrycastle started the second half strongly, and soon regained the lead with some great scores building on solid defensive work, with Sean Doyle impressing, and some great midfield play. From then to the end, the teams traded scores, but just as the game ended, the last Garrycastle attack was waved agonisingly wide by the referee, to leave Clann the victors by a single point.

In the Under-9 match, Garrycastle also started the stronger, and led all the way to the half-time break. The Clann team attacked strongly as the second half started, but some great play by the backline of Anthony Mannion, Kyle Greene and Andrew Henson kept the chances to a minimum, while at the other end of the field, the scoreboard was kept ticking over with some great scores from James McHugh, Aaron Keegan and Jack Allen. Garrycastle maintained their lead from start to finish in this game to take a well-deserved win.

So, honours even on the evening, but with a little bit of luck, both games could have been won. Overall, this was an excellent display, with great skill and effort from all the players present.

Squad on the evening:

Under-10: Conor McCarthy, Jack Mulvihill, Sean Doyle, Oisin Nugent, Diarmaid Murtagh, Brian Mulvihill, Jamie Carroll, Cian McCormack, Thanh McCay, Killian Redmond, Matthew Conner.

Under-9: Dean Grehan, Anthony Mannion, Kyle Greene, Andrew Henson, Jack Allen, Sean O'Donoghue, David Carter, Oisin Mulvihill, James McHugh, Brandon Devaney, Aaron Keegan.

Under 12:        The Downs 3-08;        Garrycastle 1-07

Our U12s made the long journey to the Downs last Wednesday evening to take on the home side in a Division 1 league tie. On a difficult evening for football because of a swirling wind the lads gave an excellent account of themselves against a physically stronger and taller Downs side. The game was only decided in the final 10 minutes by the concession of two late Downs goals against the run of play. In what was a fine team effort from the boys despite still being short a few lads due to holidays they went toe to toe with a Downs team. They played some great football from start to finish and unfortunately some unforced handling errors cost them in the end. This was a very pleasing performance from the mentors' perspective and we hope to continue this form into our next game away to St Loman's.

Panel: Bill Carmody, Frank McKiernan, Cian McCarthy, Chris Kehoe, Peter Mulvihill, John McBride, John Dylan O'Shea, Ben Kilkenny, Corey Nugent, Ben Donegan, Andrew Ruane, Krill Egan, Tadhg McKiernan, Rishav Gufta, Stephen Gaffey, Frano Derwin, Niall Agwabaro, Adam Mulvihill, Rory Kilgarriff.

Junior Football championship:                      Garrycastle 1-12;       Athlone 2-9

The Juniors dropped their first point in this year's championship when they relinquished an 8-point lead against a 14-man Athlone team in Páirc Chiaráin last Friday evening. Garrycastle started well and took a two-point lead before Athlone scored three unanswered points to hit the front. Both sides were guilty of aimless shooting but Garrycastle hit a good patch in the second quarter and led by 0-6 to 0-5 as half time approached. Athlone's centre half back was then red-carded and almost immediately Kenny Dolan pounced on a rebound to get the game's first goal. A four-point lead with an extra man should have given Garrycastle the impetus to push on and win the game and they seemed to be doing just that in the third quarter, at the end of which they led by 1-11 to 0-6. However, they lost their urgency and shape completely in the final quarter and conceded 2-2 in the space of about eight minutes and the sides were level. At this stage Athlone seemed to have the momentum until Alan Daly

signalled his arrival on the field by working hard to set up a good point by another late substitute Noel Galvin. In the final minute Athlone were awarded a 30-yard free which Joe Fallon converted with the last kick of the game. Garrycastle will be disappointed to lose their 100% record and while the point earned was enough to top the group a big improvement will be needed when they play Ballycomoyle in the quarter final.

TEAM: Shane O'Connell, Ben Kennedy, Gary Mullery, John O'Shaughnessy, Padraig Cosgrove, Mark Curley, Anthony Larkin, Johnny McGuire (0-1), Seanie O'Donoghue, Peadar Mulvihill, Cathal Mannion (0-2, 1 free), Enda Keena (0-3), Paul Gunning, Kenny Dolan (1-3, 1 free), Paul Mulvihill (0-1).

Subs: Eric Kearney for Gunning (half time), Frank Farrell (0-1) for Cosgrove (injured, 39 mins), Noel Galvin (0-1) for O'Donoghue (51 mins), Alan Daly for Peadar Mulvihill (54 mins).

NOTE: It was great to see Frank Farrell back in action after a long absence due to injury. His return is a big boost to the team and the club, as he showed when scoring a lovely point after his introduction.

Senior championship: St. Loman's 0-11;       Garrycastle 0-3

For the first time since 1999 Garrycastle will not be involved in the knock-out stage of the senior championship after this very disappointing display against Loman's in Cusack Park last Sunday. On a miserable evening for football Loman's started well with the aid of the breeze, kicking two early points. Conor Cosgrove opened Garrycastle's account following a good diagonal delivery by Matthew Guiheen but there was little good approach play from Garrycastle for the remainder of the game. Loman's continued to play the more constructive football and led by 0-6 to 0-2 at the break. Garrycastle needed a good start to the second half but three pointed frees from Loman's were the only scores in the third quarter. Gary McCallon kicked a good point from play but Loman's lead was never threatened and the goal that Garrycastle badly needed never looked likely. The only positive memory from a Garrycastle point of view was the tremendous ovation given to Dessie Dolan when he went off injured in the second half. Dessie has been carrying a serious injury all summer and is due to undergo surgery in the coming weeks. Everyone in the club wishes him well.

TEAM: Cathal Mullin, Mark McCallon (captain), Jack Donohue, James Dolan, Karl Henson, John Gaffey, Gary McCallon (0-1), Aidan Browne, Justin Barrett, Doran Harte, Dessie Dolan (0-1, free), Matthew Guiheen, Conor Cosgrove (0-1), Alex Gardiner, Michael Monaghan.

Subs: Eoin Monaghan for Cosgrove (20 mins); Gavin Ward for M. Monaghan (30 mins); James Duignan for Gardiner (36 mins); Damien Rushe for E. Monaghan (44 mins); Gary Dolan for D. Dolan (45 mins); Ciaran O'Neill for Guiheen (50 mins)
