Liberty Insurance All Ireland Premier Junior Championship Semi Final

The Juniors travelled to St. Brendan's Park, Birr on Saturday to take on Laois in the All Ireland Semi Final.  Having been beaten by Laois in the league stages of the Championship the team knew they had it all to do to reverse that result.

The first half was a close affair with Westmeath getting first on the scoresheet with a pointed from Muireann Scally, followed closely by a point from play by Fiona Leavy.  Unfortunately this dream start was cancelled out by a Laois goal after 8 mins. Pamela Greville scored Westmeath's next two points - the first following a good pass by Caoimhe McCrossan, and the second after a fine solo run out on the wing.  Laois were ahead 1-02 to 0-04 at this stage but Westmeath were pressing hard when Denise McGrath was taken down in the square.  Pamela Greville scored a point from the resultant penalty to draw the match and only a point late in injury time saw Laois go in one up at the break 1-03 to 0-05.

Unfortunately luck didn't run with the team in the second half.   Joanne McCormack was unlucky not to score a goal after five minutes when a rebounded ball deflected off her hurl over the bar rather than under it.  Pamela Greville was pulled down in the square but no penalty, or indeed free, was forthcoming.  While the game was there for the taking in the first ten minutes of the second half, Laois pulled away in the final twenty minutes with Westmeath only scoring two further points - a free from Muireann Scally, and a point from play courtesy of substitute Katie Heffernan.  Final Score Laois 1-16 Westmeath 0-05.
