U14

On Thursday last Tyrrellspass hosted local Rivals Kilbeggan/St Joseph's in round 4 of the Division 2 Championship. Missing some key players this was always going to be a tough task against a physically bigger and stronger team. The visitors opened the game strongly and scored a couple of quick goals and really put the home team on the back foot. Tyrrellspass tried to rally but some poor shooting in front of goal also with two shots coming back off the cross bar left the blues trailing for the half. There were plenty of chances for the blues being created but we just couldn't convert them into scores. The visitors' keeper was also called into action twice and made two very good saves before the break. Tyrrellspass took advantage of the half time break and were more involved in the game after the restart. They began to settle more and played with more conviction. When the young blues ran at the Kilbeggan/St Joseph's defence we caused them problems and eventually were rewarded with goals. Tyrrellspass scored three goals in the second half an caused concern for the visitors for a long period of the second half. Unfortunately, the impact of a small squad of players was evident when some of our stronger lads picked up injuries and had to be replaced. This wasn't helped when the visitors netted again to extend their lead. For the last few minutes of the game Tyrrellspass rallied again and showed great character and courage as they battle to the end. Unfortunately we came up short and Kilbeggan/St Joseph's ran out deserved winners, 3-07 to 5-15. One of our young blues was on a great solo run towards the visitors goal near the end of the game when he was fouled. No issues with the foul being committed but it was very disappointing to hear a mentor from the visiting team shouting at his defenders to 'take him out of it', at a stage when his team were winning by 14 points! Tyrrellspass were unlucky on the night to lose out but there is lots of positives to be taken from the game. If we had converted most of the chances created there would have been very little between both teams and who knows what way it would have went; as they say goals win games; the visitors took their chances whilst we crashed the ball of the cross bar three times in the game and produced three or four great saves from the visiting goalkeeper. Next up is a trip away to play Lilliput Gaels (St Malachy's/Ballinagore/Loughnavalley) on Sunday next 23rd August at 11.30 a.m. and there is still everything to play for. Minor Football Championships Tyrrellspass Minors will play Coralstown/Kinnegad on Wednesday 19th August in the Westmeath Division 3 Minor Football Championship. Tyrrellspass Ladies Football

Tyrrellspass travelled to Caulry to meet Garrycastle in the play off for the a place in the semi- final of the County Championship. Garrycastle set the tone of the game from the outset scoring 2 points and a goal in the opening minutes. At the end of the first half Tyrrellspass only managed 2 points as opposed the Garrycastle's 2-5. The second half brought little change as the opposition surged ahead and made it almost impossible for Tyrrellspass to score. A point form a free was the only score for us in the second half. This was a poor reflection of the effort put in by the Tyrrellspass ladies. Tyrrellspass held good possession for periods of the game however this paid little dividends with several shots just shy of the target. This coupled with two key players coming off due to injuries formed the opinion that it was just not our day. Credit to Garrycastle who were worthy winners. Final score, 0-3 to 4-11. Team Sarah Keegan, Cliona Gallagher (Capt), Marguerite O'Connor, Avril Kane, Madeleine Chester, Mary Deegan, Aoibha O'Reilly, Lisa Rigney, Amy Alford, Katie Deegan, Louise Early, jo-hanna Maher, Ciara Scally, Nikki Feery, Niamh Malloy. Subs; Edel Glennon for Niamh Malloy, Ciara Deegan for Aoibha O'Reilly, Carol Mealiffe for Madeleine Chester, Naimh Malloy for Sarah Keegan, Lorraine Daly for Louise Early and Tamara Nolan for Cliona Gallagher.

Tyrrellspass ladies hosted Caulry in the U16 Ladies football league at home on Wed. 12th August last. On a warm sunny evening both teams provided a great display of football for parents and supporters with some great scores taken by both sides. Caulry started strongest and had 5 points on the board before Tyrrellspass rallied with a goal and a point, but Caulry again came strong scoring a great tally of 1- 10 in the first half. The home team were battling to keep in touch at times and were struggling in defence but pushed on to score another goal and 2 points and were probably lucky to be only trailing by 4 points at the half time interval. A much more determined Tyrrellspass took the field in the second half and aided by strong words of advice from management and a few positional changes it wasn't long before they broke through the Caulry defence to score a goal which set them up for the come back required. Relentless work from the Tyrrellspass midfield players throughout the s econd half set up the scoring chances needed to push ahead with another point and a goal in quick succession whereas Caulry had difficulty breaking through the Tyrrellspass backline who now were playing with much more vigor and determination. Caulry had to settle for 4 points in total in the second half versus 2-5 for the Tyrrellspass girls leaving the home team winners on a scoreline of 4-8 to 1-14. Congratulations to both teams for a great competitive game and thanks to Ref. Agnes Murtagh who officiated on the day. Tyrrellspass: Aoife O'Brien, Lorna Keane, Anna Daly, Briana Alford, Eleanor O'Connor, Claire Jessop, Louise Earley, Robyn Feery, Morna Brady, Shauna Harte, Emily Gavigan, Laura Flanagan, Annamai Glennon, Danielle Brennan. A speedy recovery is wished to Chloe Rigney who is out injured presently.
