Mullingar Shamrocks club notes

July 27, 2015

Junior B Semi-Final:

Shamrocks qualified for their first county final of 2015 with what ultimately proved to be an impressive victory over Shandonagh on a 2-15 to 1-10 score line in a match played at Springfield last Thursday evening. Shamrocks dominated the early stages but faded and were fortunate to be in touch at half-time. Shandonagh fully deserved their 1-6 to 0-4 lead. Only a brilliant first-half display by Tye Adamson, who scored all four points, kept Shamrocks' interest in this championship alive. Mark McLoughlin battled hard at mid-field. It was great to see Mark make a return to active service after spending some years in the Australian Outback and thankfully free of the injuries that derailed a very promising football career in the past. Another who came back was Micheál Curley who made his first appearance in a Shamrocks jersey in almost two years after returning from Canada. Dean Moore was also introduced as a half-tine substitute and his introduction added much needed firepower to the attack. Shamrocks outscored Shandonagh by 2-11 to 0-4 in the second-half. Tye Adamson continued his first-half excellence and scored another 0-4 (0-7 of the 0-8 came from play), Dean Moore 1-4 and Brendan O'Reilly 1-2 to secure a convincing victory; the final score line perhaps not reflecting what for long spells was a very good display by a young Shandonagh team.

Shamrocks: Alan Kevin, James Shaw (Micheál Curley), Robert Ryan, Paul Christie; Paddy Joyce (0-1), David Miller, Kyle Maguire (David Culkin); Paul Hickey and Mark McLoughlin; Billy Flynn, Tye Adamson (0-8) (Neil Hannigan), Brian Melody; Mickey McKnight, Gary Corroon (Dean Moore 1-4), Brendan O'Reilly (1-2).

Senior & Minor Ladies Championship:

Our Senior ladies championship campaign finished for 2015 after a well fought victory over Rochfortbridge in the final group game of the Senior championship last Wednesday evening. This year didn't exactly go to plan for the ladies, defeats to Milltown and St.Lomans in earlier rounds meant they would not progress to the knock-out stages for the first time since 2011. The final round game against Rochfortbridge was a must win to avoid a relegation battle. The Ladies were well in control in the first half, using the strong wind to their advantage. Half time score was 1-11 to 0-03. The second half however was not for the faint hearted, as the game began to turn in Rochfortbridge's favor. However the ladies dug deep and managed to hold on to a 3 point victory. Credit to their management team of Paul Ahearne and Eric Smith who have worked very hard with the girls over the last couple of years.

Our Minor ladies kicked off their championship campaign with a fine win over Garrycastle. Missing some regular players due to holidays the girls travelled to Castledaly with just the bare 15, all of which worked very hard and gave a great account of themselves throughout. The game finished 7-21 to 8-05. This was a huge team effort and there is certainly great potential for this team to progress well in the Minor championship.
