MINOR BOYS FOOTBALL

OUR Shandonagh minors played the 5th game of the Division 1 league at home to Athlone last Wednesday. On a fine evening a young Shandonagh outfit played a strong Athlone side losing by 6 points after an entertaining game.

The first half was evenly contested with scores exchanged. Athlone finished stronger to lead at the break by 2-8 to 0-7. Shandonagh produced a spirited 2nd half display and out scored their opponents however finished on the losing side by 4-13 to 3-9.

Training is on Monday and the next game is away to Shannon Gaels on Friday next at 7:30. Full turnout needed to secure another league win!

LADIES FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Shandonagh 1-5 Moate 0-10

This was a disappointing result for a squad that had championship hopes for 2015. However it is in the face of adversity that champions and leaders are born. It is now imperative that our talented girls pick themselves up from this setback, train harder and in greater numbers to achieve what is within their spirit.

On a related matter it was great to see our terraces (such as they are) as full as they were. There is a community support behind these girls, that is growing in number by the game. So thank you to all the supporters who came and were vocal in their support for this squad.

ALL COUNTY FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION ii RESULT

Ballynacargy 1-13 Shandonagh 1-09

On a lovely sun kissed Moynihan Park last Sunday evening (5th July ), near neighbours Ballynacargy played host to us in the ACFL Div ii. Both teams have been performing well in this competition and that coupled with the derby aspect, ensured that the scene was nicely poised for an exciting encounter.

End to end football was served up in the opening moiety, but it was the home side who made the most of the chances presented to them as they were the more efficient in front of the goals and went in at the break ahead on a scoreline of 0-5 to Shandonagh's 0-4. During this spell Shandonagh kicked an incredible 14 wides.

The second half proved no better for our men in blue as they went on to concede 1-8 and could only muster 1-5. Our goal only came courtesy of a penalty with the last kick of the game from Kevin Boyle which put a finer gloss on the game from our point of view.

Poor decision making in front of goals, an unwillingness to track back and make the opposition's job more difficult were the primary causes of our defeat. Nevertheless, we have an opportunity to pull together again on the training ground on Tuesday night and if the numbers assembled in the dressing room on Sunday night are replicated on Tuesday, the future mightn't be too bleak at all!!

COMMUNITY MATTERS

WE wish Kevin Duffy and Linda Duignan long and happy lives together as they celebrate their wedding to each other next weekend.

Congratulations to the former Shandonagh great Vincent Hewitt as he celebrates his 40th birthday next weekend also.

LOTTO RESULTS
