U16 Girls
Athlone v Kinnegad
Our U16 girls faced Kinnegad in the championship on Monday last in Pairc Chiarain and came away with a comfortable victory on a score line of 4-9 to 0-12. The first half was a very even affair with scores from Lauryn Mitchell(1-1), Brionna Geoghegan(0-1) and Niamh Byrne(0-1) being cancelled out by six points from Kinnegad. The second half was similar to the first with scores from Grace Halligan(2-0), Lauryn O'Connor(0-1), Lauryn Mitchell(1-0), Brionna(0-1),
Nadia Molloy(0-3), Niamh McGann(0-1). Kinnegad also scored six points in the second half. This was an important victory for this group as two years ago in the U14 semi final Kinnegad beat us very easily so to turn the tables on them is a great sign of progress. We still have 4 games left in the championship so we are well placed to qualify for the semi final. Since the game Lauryn Mitchell has had an operation on her knee so we wish you a speedy recovery and look forward to having you back shortly to terrorise the full backs on the opposition.
Panel: Aoife Temple, Kayleigh Mannion, Caoimhe Mannion, Amy Joyce, Rachael Barrington, Alannah Reynolds-Duignan, Anna Redmond, Ally Mahon, Chloe Moran, Lauren O'Connor, Kelly Brill, Eadaoin Fleming, Niamh Byrne, Lauryn Mitchell, Nadia Molloy, Brionna Geoghegan, Grace Halligan, Niamh McGann, Amy Earl.

Athlone U14 Girls Feile
Our U14 girls travelled to Cloghan, Co Monaghan to take part in the Regional Feile competition on Saturday 27th June. We left Pairc Chiarain at 7.15am knowing that it was going to be a tough day and that we would have to be at our best to get to the final. We faced Lucan Sarsfields in our first game. Athlone started slowly and were quickly 3-1 behind. However a late point from Brionna followed by a goal from a penalty from Grace got us back in the game. The sides had two early points each in the second half. Then Ellen O'Connell broke through for a goal but this was quickly cancelled by a goal from Lucan. Then Brionna and Grace scored two quick goals to leave the sides level with 1 minute left. Another Athlone attack almost brought a score but despite Ellen being fouled the referee waved on play and from a long shot from Lucan the ball dropped under the crossbar for a goal and the final whistle sounded immediately. The final score was Lucan 5-3 Athlone 4-3.

The girls were devastated but had to try to get themselves up for the next game immediately against Foxrock Cabinteely. Unfortunately the opposition were an exceptionally strong outfit and dominated the first half scoring 5-6 without reply. The second half saw a major improvement for Athlone and we had points from Grace(4), Brionna(2) and Eadaoine Martin. Foxrock only scored 2 points in the second half so the final score was Foxrock 5-8 Athlone 0-7. The second half performance lifted the spirits for the final group game which was against Aodh Ruadh from Tyrone. We started strongly and Kasie Quinn scored a point but we missed some great scoring chances and Aodh Ruadh took over for a period of time and added 1-4 without reply. An Ellen O'Connell goal with the last kick of the half lifted the spirits and it was a changed team that came out for the second half. Scores from Grace(2-2), Kasey(0-1), Niamh McGann(2-0), Brionna(1-1), Eadaoine (0-1) left the score at the final whistle Athlone 6-8 Aodh Ruadh 1-6.

This was a great experience for the girls who performed excellently and were unlucky not to come away with two victories. It proved that they can hold their own with any team in the country. They must now focus on the U14 championship and their next game is in just three days time against The Downs, in Pairc Chiarain. Many thanks to the parents and supporters who travelled to the games and to all those that helped out with the team on the day.

New York Feile Boys team visit Athlone GAA
The U14 Feile Peil na nOg tournament has been a happy hunting ground of late for Athlone but in a year where we didn't qualify it was very pleasing to help the Gaels from New York prepare for their involvement. Under the expert care of former Athlone stalwart, Mick Healy, the New York Feile boys played a warm up match in Pairc Chiarain on Wednesday last against the home side. On a balmy evening, there was a large crowd in attendance to witness the exhibition match and they were not disappointed by the level of play on display. After an hour's energy sapping football both teams were more than happy to adjourn to the clubhouse for refreshments. We look forward to the return leg.......

U10 Boys
Our under 10 boys played a very entertaining couple of matches against our neighbours to the West, St Brigids on Thursday evening last in Pairc Chiarain. Despite the very strong wind it was a credit to both teams the high standard of football they displayed. As a change to the norm, we played an U9 game and an U10 game and both games turned out to be score fests as the gale force winds meant that each team spent one half camped in the opposition half. It was a tough day for defenders but fair play to the lads they kept going to the end and at the long whistle there was little or nothing between the teams in both games. Many thanks to Aidan for bringing the teams in from Kiltoom. Next up is the first round of the Clann Tournament in Johnstown on Thursday the 2nd July at 7pm.

The Athlone panel  on the night was: Cian Dolan, Luke Farrell, Cillian Geary, Cathal Hardiman, Toby Heavey, Conor Hughes, Matthew Keane, Josh Kenny, Darragh Lough, Kyle Mahon, Johnny Martin, Cillian McGowan,  Lorcan McCormack, Conal McCourt, Dano McMonagle, Owen McNamara, Kian Mitchell, Tiernan Mitchell, Luke Nicholson, Luke O'Connell, Ruairi O'Duibhir, Liam Rowan, Dominic Stelmaszczyk, Jason Ukatu and Justin Walsh.
