St Josephs GAA Notes

ACFL (Div 6)
St Josephs 2-12  Moate All Whites 1-7
St Josephs kept up the push for a promotion spot from Division 6 of the league with a well earned win over Moate All Whites at Hogan Park Moate on Saturday 27th June.  Having not had a league game for quite a while, it was important for us to win this one and overall it was a good display which gained the two league points on offer. Both sides were slow enough off the mark with each team scoring just a point apiece inside the opening ten minutes. However, St Josephs made a burst between the 13th and 17th minutes scoring 1-2 without reply to forge ahead by 1-3 to 0-1. The goal was well worked with Andrew Mc Cormack finishing off a clever move from close range.  Two further points saw St Josephs move on to 1-5 by half time but despite being the better team we only held a three point lead at the break.  Three swift points in the opening six minutes of the second half saw St Josephs move six in front and in a relatively comfortable position. However, Moate grabbed a goal from a mishit free which should have been cleared to close the gap to three at 1-5 to 1-8 after 13 minutes of the half.  St Josephs hit back with a point and Moate responded to still leave the gap at three after 19 minutes of the second half. However, four unanswered points between the 19th and 25th minutes sent St Josephs clear at 1-12 to 1-6 as the game headed to a conclusion with Patrick Egan's being the pick of them.  Moate did try hard for a goal in the final stages but had to settle for a solitary point while St Josephs grabbed a second goal when Niall Moran's 45 dropped in past an unfortunate Moate keeper to leave eight between the sides at the finish. It was vital to get the points from this game which leaves us on six points from a possible eight. We have three tough games to come against The Downs,St Marys Rochfortbridge and Mullingar Shamrocks to come. We need to win at least two of them to gain promotion so lets keep it going.  There were plenty of good performances with Martin Looram having a good outing between the sticks and Brian Fitzgerald solid at full back. The midfield pairing of Wayne & Colm Mc Cormack had a good hour and while Andrew Mc Cormack and Niall Moran accounted for a large portion of the scoring they were ably assisted by hard work from Hugh Boyle,Damien Mc Cormack,Andy Scally and the every youthful Aidan Lennon!

Well Done Westmeath:
Well done to Westmeath Senior footballers who finally defeated Meath in a Senior Championship game. What a display from Westmeath. Dead & Buried at half time and superb at the end. Magic ! Well Done to the Westmeath Ladies who also qualified for the Leinster final by defeating Meath.
