Kieran Gavin is on course to feature in Westmeath's Leinster SFC quarter-final against Wexford on June 14 after making his return from injury last night.

The former DCU Sigerson Cup winning captain started Mullingar Shamrocks' facile 2-17 to 0-8 victory over Bunbrosna in the opening round of the Westmeath SFC at Cusack Park. It was the full back's first competitive outing for either club or county since he tore his Achilles tendon in a club championship game against Castledaly last August.

In the curtain-raiser, Coralstown/Kinnegad came from behind to earn a 0-13 to 2-7 draw with newly-promoted Caulry.

Meanwhile, John Connellan - who missed Westmeath's Leinster SFC first round win over Louth through injury - looked sharp as Athlone's first ever IFC game against a depleted Shandonagh side in Rosemount yielded a 0-15 to 0-7 victory.
