Moate All Whites played Ballymore in a Division 3 league match on Sunday afternoon. The team that started was as follows: A Ryan, A Claffey, D Buckley, D Ennis, D Bracken, R Gorman, B Arigho, J Madden, D Minnok, N Adamson, D Adamson, J Corbally, B Berry, N Mackey and C Bradley. The first half started off slow and with 20 minutes gone Ballymore led by 2 points to 1. Then came a decisive moment in the match when a ball fell kindly to the Ballymore full forward and he dispatched the ball to the back of the Moate net. Ballymore would add another point before Moate rallied to kick 2 points before half time leaving just the goal between the two teams. The second half started off much the same as the first with both teams exchanging scores before disaster struck and Ballymore scored another goal from a defensive mix up. This gave them a 6 point lead going into the last quarter of the match. Ballymore added another couple of points to put the game beyond Moate. With about 10 minutes to go Moate made some changes and gave a run to some of the youger players on the panel. This was to have a very positive impact and Moate kicked 4 points without reply. The final score was Moate 0-10 Ballymore 2-8. Scorers for Moate were N Adamson 0-5, C Bradley 0-5, B Webb 0-1 and B Berry 0-1. Best for Moate on the day were Robbie Gorman and Dillon Ennis. While it was a disappointing result there were some positives from the match. Paul, Gerry and David have instilled a belief in the players to never give up and that was very evident for the last 10 minutes of the game. All roads lead to Milltown next weekend where we take on Rosemount in the first round of the Intermediate championship. The teams haven't met in the championship for 15 years so Sunday promises to be a wonderful occasion when old rivalries are renewed.
On Monday evening last, our u14 s played Athlone in the third round of the league. Conditions were ideal for the game. Moate were missing six of the regular team so it was always going to be a tough ask to compete with such a strong Athlone team. Athlone took an early lead which they never relinquished. However credit to our lads who kept going to the end but on this occasion a win for the visitors was never in doubt. Congratulations to all the boys from St Oliver Plunketts NS who won the Cumman na mBun Scoil final on Wednesday last. Well done lads. On Friday last, Moate hosted an U8 go game blitz. Athlone, Caulry and St Malachys/Ballinagore all fielded teams and a wonderful day was had by all. Moate fielded 3 teams on the day with is an incredible testament to the work put in by the coaches and parents.
