Shane Fitzpatrick, Alan Stone, MJ Kelly, Gordon Duffy, Paddy
Holloway, Niall Duffy, Brendan Kelly, Eamon Fleming, David Stone, Enda
Kelly, Paul Kelly. Subs Paul Henson Paul Costello
Castledaly left it late but rallied in the dying minutes of the game
to over come the visitors second half revival and secure a home
victory in this important must win game.
Castledaly opened scoring with two points from Paul Kelly from play
while Ballinacargy saw their initial efforts drop short into the safe
hands of Castledaly keeper Paddy Golden. In defence Darragh Kelly was
up against quality opponent but after few minutes started to take
control; Darragh stopped a Ballinacargy effort with a well executed
shot block and turned over possession. at the scoring end Brendan
Kelly added a free kick for a foul on Paul Kelly, while Paddy Holloway
and Gordon Duffy continued to win strong possession in midfield. John
Warburton, Shane Fitzpatrick, MJ Kelly, were all busy in Castledaly
defensive lines keeping Ballinacargy under pressure and shooting wide
off the mark. However the visitors were not to be outdone for long
and as Castledaly failed to clear their lines Ballinacargy swooped and
added a well taken first point from play. In reply Castledaly's
Holloway caught the follow up kick out and his long ball pass into
David Stone saw the young forward fouled and win a free kick that was
unfortunately clipped off the upright and wide. Ballinacargy replied
with their second point from play before Paul Kelly added a fourth
point for the home team. Castledaly continued to create chances and
custodian Paddy Golden's long kick out found Brendan Kelly in space
and his quick pass to Paul Kelly gave the on form corner forward
chance to thunder a shot to the back of the oppositions net.
Ballinacargy continued to press for scores and as the home team
defences failed to clear a visitors attack, their ball block down
allowed the men in blue to add their third point. In an impressive
display Darragh Kelly earned an injury for his efforts and Castledaly
introduced Paul Henson as sub. Castledaly's follow up efforts were
wide off the mark before Brendan Kelly added two free kicks for fouls
on Paul Kelly and Paddy Holloway, as Castledaly reached half time with
a lead of 1-05 to 04
Ballinacargy got off to a great start in the second half with two
points from play before David Stone added Castledaly point from a
Holloway pass. The visitors added their seventh, eighth and ninth
points to equalise before Castledaly again added a point from Alan
Stone free kick for foul on Holloway. David Stone extended Castledaly
s lead before he was substituted for Paul Costello. Brendan Kelly
added a point from play but Ballinacargy added their tenth and
eleventh points.
Castledaly introduced sub Shane Dolan as they sought to resolve their
defensive frailties and the visitors almost took the lead with minutes
left to play as a definite goal bound effort was tipped wide off the
target by a full stretch save from reliable custodian Paddy Golden.
As Castledaly scrambled to recover their poise, their scoring efforts
continued to fall short and sailed wide again and again. An exchange
of passes led to Niall Duffy who calmly punched his point over the bar
and give his team some breathing space on the scoreboard. This point
seemed to settle Castledaly and as they found their stride again
Brendan Kelly added another free kick point. Paul Kelly had a last
minute chance to add another goal but found the Ballinacargy goalie in
equally top form as his counterpart as he tipped Paul's effort wide
off target.
Castledaly breathed a sigh of relief as the final whistle sounded with
a home team victory by the narrowest of margins. Castledaly will look
to no small amount of good luck and a lot of missed opportunities
which they must eliminate to progress further this year.
