Coosan/BeechPark West Under 10 Gaelic Football players got off to a flying start in the first round of the Westmeath knock-out competition. Aided by a strong breeze Coosan were camped in the Kinnegad/Corralstown half and notched up a few early goals and points. Kian Mitchell started the scoring with 2 early points and as Captain led from the front to put in a sterling performance in midfield. Cillian McGowan nicked a great early goal and was dangerous all through the game to also pick off a point later on. The defence was held firm by Shane Wheatley, Evan McMikan and Lorcan McCormack who stuck form to their defensive roles. Goals win matches and there was no better goal scorer on the day than Conor Hughes, who was lethal in attack to bag a hatrick before the game was over. Meanwhile Cathal Hardiman was immense in defence, ably aided by Donal McDermott who did the best man-marking of the day, supported well by Liam Rowan. The visitors to Pairc Chiarain were not going to go home without a fight and fought back strongly, but Owen McNamara put in a fantastic performance in midfield to prevent many attacks, while setting up many of our own. The resourceful Cillian Geary, excelled in his sweeper role cleaning up balls in defence and setting up scores in attack. Matthew Connor and John Fleming were brave in attack, putting in some great tackles when required. When the visitors came back fighting with the wind, Ruairí O Duibhir did his job well in goals, especially with his well-placed kick outs to always find a team mate. It was a great relief to hear the final whistle, running out winners on a score line of 5-6 to 3-2.
