Westmeath full back Kieran Gavin could be facing another three months on the sidelines after suffering a setback in his recovery from an Achilles tendon injury.

The Mullingar Shamrocks clubman was hoping to return to action in the next few weeks, but was told by a specialist in Newry last week that he may risk further damage if he returns too soon. He is now facing the prospect of missing Westmeath's entire Allianz League campaign, and could also be a doubt for their Leinster SFC opener against Louth in Drogheda on May 17.

The 2012 DCU Sigerson Cup winning captain sustained the injury while playing for his club against Castledaly in the local SFC last August, and was a major loss as Shamrocks lost the county final to Garrycastle.
