Westmeath GAA notes

December 15, 2014

County Convention 2014:
Westmeath GAA County Convention takes place in Brownstown Community Centre on Sunday 21st December 2014 with proceedings commencing at 3-00pm. The convention will be preceded by Mass for deceased members which is at 2-15pm. This years convention will certainly be a quite one as far as changes in officers are concerned with no major position being contested except for Vice Chairman and Central Council delegate. There are of course a number of motions on the agenda though it is expected that most of those will be referred to the County Planning Committee as the bulk of them refer to administration of games within the County. This is the first time for the Brownstown Club to host convention and as it will be held in the New Community Centre which serves the Archerstown community. It will be a first opportunity for many club delegates to appreciate the great work carried out in the recent past by Brownstown and certainly the new centre does great justice to their club.

Minor Hurling Trials:
Hurling Clubs are asked to please take note that trials for the Westmeath Minor team for 2015 take place immediately after Christmas with two trials planned. The first trial is on Friday 2nd January 2015 at 4pm and the second is on Saturday 3rd January at 12pm with both being hosted by St Lomans Mullingar. Clubs are asked to contact Johnny on 087 9042021 or by email at [email protected] with details of the Club, Players Names,Players Mobile Numbers and Club contact number. To organise these trials properly and efficiently, all information must be forwarded by Wednesday 17th December 2014.

Junior Cup Football Final:
The last major Adult Cup competition was completed on Sunday 14th December with Milltown defeating Moate All Whites by 2-7 to 1-6 in the final of the Junior Cup for 2014 thus retaining the trophy for the second successive year. It is certainly a welcome boost for Milltown who looked championship contenders earlier in the year but endured a frustrating season in the end. For Moate, the loss denies them a clean sweep of the Junior grade within Westmeath but it has been a terrific year for them as they look forward to 2015 with an All Ireland semi final to come in January. Well done to Milltown on their victory and also to their club for having the facilities in very good condition so late in the playing season.

O Byrne Cup 2015:
The 2015 playing season will commence for Westmeath Senior Footballers on Sunday 4th January with a home game against Meath in Mullingar, followed by games against DCU in Kinnegad on Wednesday 7th January and an away game to Longford in Ballymahon on Sunday 11th January. Both Sunday games have 2.00pm throw in times while the Wednesday evening game is at 7.30pm. It will be the first opportunity for Manager Tom Cribbin to get a look at the Westmeath Seniors in a competitive structure and for Westmeath supporters to do likewise in advance of the National Football league which commences in February.

Walsh Cup 2015:
Like their Football counterparts, Westmeath senior Hurlers will have a busy pre season with two games in The Walsh Cup on 11th and 18th January 2015. Michael Ryan's charges commence their season with Offaly visiting Mullingar in the first round followed by another home game against Galway on the following Sunday. Both matches throw in at 2.00pm and should Westmeath progress then the semi finals of this competition are on Sunday 1st February 2015.

Seasons Greetings;
On my own behalf an on behalf of all involved with Westmeath GAA, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our County GAA people a very Happy Christmas and a successful and enjoyable year in 2015 for our club and County teams.  Nollaig Shona Daoibh Go Léir.
