Dolan rues slow start

Dessie Dolan Snr says Garrycastle's sluggish start left them with "a mountain to climb" against St. Vincent's.

Trailing by 10 points coming up to half-time, the Westmeath champions proceeded to reel off 1-7 without reply to draw level by the 42nd minute, but after James Dolan was denied a goal by goalkeeper Michael Savage, the All-Ireland champions regained the lead and eventually prevailed on a 3-9 to 1-10 scoreline.

"We gave them 20 minutes of freedom and at half-time we had a mountain to climb," the Garrycastle manager explained.

"Fair play to the lads. They brought it back and we started playing the football we are capable of."

Dolan suggested that the scare St. Vincent's got in Parnell Park will stand them in good stead for the final against Rhode on December 14.

"Maybe it will. Tommy Conroy (St. Vincent's manager) and Ger Brennan certainly came into our dressing-room and said they were hugely relieved because they thought they were going out."
