The late Michael Murtagh.
There was widespread regret and sadness in the Crookedwood area on hearing of the death of Michael Murtagh, Gaulmoylestown and formally of Shefin.
Michael was a stalwart member of Crookedwood and was a loyal supporter right to the end. He would often recall the old days when all the lads would make their own hurl in the old hall at the Wood, having cut and seasoned the ash well in advance.
As a player Michael had a long career on the field of play proving that he was capable of playing the game in all it's skills and facets. He was rewarded for his efforts when he lined out at left half back on the Crookedwood team that won the Junior Championship in 1956.
One of his team-mates explained that "Michael made the number 7 jersey his own and was very capable of dealing with his opponent on any given day."
He was a genuine G.A.A. man- when his playing days came to an end, he was involved in Scor and represented the club on many occasions reaching county finals in the sketch competition.
In the 80's he served as Chairman and was President of the club for the past number of years. Michael, who celebrated his eightieth birthday earlier this year, was a true and loyal supporter of hurling, attending as many matches at all grades as was possible for him. He had a huge interest in the youth and would always inquire how various teams were getting on.
Our fundraising events were always supported by Mickey and he enjoyed nothing more than going to our Table Quiz nights in the 'Wood.' Michael will be sadly missed by all who knew him. The large attendance at his removal to Taughmon Church and funeral mass was an indication of the high esteem in which he was held by young and old.
On arrival at Taughmon the funeral cortege was escorted to the church by a guard of honour, comprising of officers, players, past players, members past and present, neighbours and friends. Our thanks to all who helped to give Michael the send off that he truly deserved. He will be sadly missed.
We extend our deepest sympathy to Michael's family on their sad loss.
