Under 14 Boys Division 2 Shield Final Result
Shandonagh 3-6 Killbeggan/St Joseph's 3-5
Our under 14 boys team, captained by Cathal Lynn, played in a thrilling battle of titanic proportions on Saturday last in the Division 2 Shield Final against Killbeggan / St Joseph's in Rochfortbridge. We had previously met each other on two seperate occasions during the season. As Shandonagh were on the losing side on both times previously, we knew we would be up against it this time out. But thanks to the additional coaching help of Gerry Bane, Derek Nagle, Kenny Rabbitt and particularly Mickey Boyle, the lads were well prepared for the task at hand. That said, we still managed to be 4 points down at half time but with pure hard work, grit and determination in the second half, we pulled it out of the fire. This was achieved in no small measure by a master class performance in full forward play by Zane Carroll who contributed with an impressive 2 goals and 4 points for the day. Jenson Nagle scored a goal worthy of any final when he ran from midfield to bury the ball in the back of the net. Points at crucial times during the game from Cathal Lynn and Aarron Flanagan completed our fantastic team display.
I would like to thank the entire squad of players who got us to the final on Saturday for their dedication and hard work all year. It is great to end the season with some silverware. If this special bunch of young men stick together, this could be the start of a lot more.
INTERMEDIATE CUP SEMI FINAL RESULT
Tubberclair 3-14 Shandonagh 1-19 (after extra time)
ON Saturday night last we journeyed to Tubberclair to take on the home side in the semi final of this cup competition. Having been resoundly beaten by this side in the championship a few months ago, we entered the grounds in Glasson with more trepidation than confidence. However the 15 galant men who took to the field were in no humour to reflect on past defeats. Despite a slow start by our boys in Blue, we went in at half time 2 points to the good. The crisp, intelligent football that was in evidence last weekend was again to the fore and it really had the Tubberclair men worried. It was they who came out in the second half with the greater intent and but for 2 goals it would have been us going through to a place in the 2014 Intermediate Cup final. Instead, we ended up nicking an equaliser at the end of normal time to draw level.
To give credit to Donal Liddy and Daire Conway this was their second competitive GAA game in the same day that went to extra time. David Duffy and Kevin Boyle had fulfilled their obligations to the county training the previous night. Aarron Craig had fulfilled his obligations to the county hurlers' training the same evening. It was these fatigued bodies that we were relying on to get us over the line in the additional 20 minutes that were to be played. In the end it was the fresh legs that Tubberclair were able to summon proved to be the difference between the two sides. Alan Coffey came on for the last 10 minutes to score 1-2.
And so another intermediate season comes to a conclusion for us and we have neither progressed nor regressed in either league nor championship. Questions need to be answered regarding ambition and committment over the next couple of weeks by a certain cohort of players if we are ever to make progress and realise our potential.
AGM
This will be the final call for the Shandonagh GAA AGM. It will be held this year on Sunday 30th November at 6pm in the clubhouse. As the club grows and progresses, we need to involve as many workers as possible and not just leave it up to the same few each year. Many of the positions do not take much time to carry out but the club does need responsible people to oversee that the jobs are done. If you are so minded, please attend next Sunday evening. Nominations and motions must be with Stephen, club secretary by 5.00pm on Wednesday 26th of November. His e-mail address is [email protected]
TABLE QUIZ
The club is deeply indebted to all of you who organised, attended, participated, sponsored and otherwise participated in the recent table quiz night held in the Mullingar Park Hotel. The night itself proved to be a great success as we had almost 60 teams competing. On the business of winning, we had Dillon Murtagh's team pipping Donal Fagan's team to claim the premier prize. Both teams, in an extra-ordinary act of generosity, donated the prize money back to the club immediately. Thank you to one and all.
LOTTO RESULTS
The Shandonagh Lotto numbers drawn this week were 17, 19, 21 & 25. There was no winner. Bunty Geraghty won the €100.
Next weeks jackpot stands at €1,200.
