INTERMEDIATE CUP QUARTER FINAL RESULT

Shandonagh 1-14 Rosemount 1-13

Despite the poor attendence of players at the beginning of the game, the ones that did show up are definately the ones you would want if ever you got into a tight scrape. Their never say die attitude, willingness to battle on even when the going got tough, and the comradery that was on display last Sunday would make any follower of the Navy and Blue proud. Crisp, intelligent, first time football was what won this game.

Ground conditions were soft underfoot on an otherwise perfect autumnal day for a game of football. Rosemount, having been beaten in this year's intermediate championship final were the quickest to settle and surged into a 1-1 to 0-1 lead within 6 minutes. Our boys steadied themselves however and imposed themselves at midfield a little more and went toe to toe with the Rosemount boys for most of the remainder of the first half, matching them score for score compliments of Alan Hickey and Kevin Boyle in the main. Despite this we were not able to peg back that goal and went in at half time 4 points down on a scoreline of 1-10 to 0-9.

The second half saw us take to the field playing with the slight breeze that was present. And thanks to a superbly taken goal by Kevin Boyle in the 12th minute of the second moiety, we found ourselves right back in the game. David Scahill's insightful words at half time obviously working! Points were traded and tensions rose as weary bodies worked on as both teams sought to gain the upper hand. Despite the fact that 5 of our boys had already been in full on competitive action earlier in the day (2 participating with the county footballers, 1 with the county hurls, and 2 on duty with Cullion Hurlers) they continued with their high work rate.  It paid off as we managed to get in front with 12 minutes remaining.  Ugly scenes developed with 3 minutes remaining, necessitating the referee to brandish 2 red cards, one to each team. For the dying moments Shandonagh managed to hang on to the single point lead that they had nicked.
