U16 Girls Group 1 League Final
Athlone v Rochfordbridge
Pairc Chiarain Tuesday 14/10/2014

The u16 girls were narrowly defeated by Rochfordbridge in the u16 Group 1 League Final in Pairc Chiarain on Tuesday evening last. In an excellent game of football the result was in doubt right up to the last minute. The 'Bridge' were out of the blocks quickly and scored an early point. However we were quickly into our stride and Ciara Egan was on hand to palm the ball to the net after Brionna Geoghegan crashed the ball off the crossbar. Brionna then scored a point. The Bridge replied with two points and a goal before Karla McManus and Niamh Byrne scored a point each and then just before the half time whistle Niamh Byrne scored a great goal following a wonderful passage of team play. The half time score was 2-3 to 1-3 in our favour. Unfortunately the half time break disrupted our rhythm and Rochfordbridge dominated the early period of the second half and scored 2-4 without reply. The management team then made a number of substitutes and the tide turned back in our favour. A point from Grace Halligan was followed by goals from Chloe Moran and Grace to leave the scores level with 10 minutes to play. The Bridge then broke down the field a scored a good goal to put them back in control. However points from Chloe and Grace reduced the deficit to the minimum. We then squandered two excellent goal chances and the momentum switched again. The Bridge got back on top and scored five unanswered points in the last five minutes to secure the win by 4-12 to 4-06. However this was a wonderful performance by the 21 players who took part and it would be extremely difficult to pick our player of the match but special mention must go to Niamh Brady and Rebecca O'Connor on their outstanding defending. From the panel of 30 girls who togged out in the blue and white only three of the girls are ineligible to play next year so the future is bright for this talented bunch.
Many thanks to the parents and supporters who brought down refreshments for the after match celebrations and this was much appreciated by all but most especially by the Rochfordbridge team, supporters and mentors.
