Jack Cooney remains keen on the vacant Westmeath football manager's post, despite failing to get the green light from the selection committee this week.

Instead, they recommended Peter Leahy for the job, but delegates refused to ratify the Mullingar man at Wednesday night's county board meeting. It means Cooney and the other candidates who were overlooked have another chance to land the position if they're still interested.

Leahy's failure to secure the backing of the clubs, which was followed by a war of words with Liam McHale, has caused huge controversy in the Lake County, and speaking to the Westmeath Topic yesterday, Cooney said the more important thing now is to bring calm to the situation.

"When all is said and done, the important thing here is Westmeath football," the Coralstown/Kinnegad clubman said.

"The players on the pitch and how they perform; trying to get everyone motivated and focused again; getting the Westmeath supporters behind the team. These are, for me as a Westmeath man, the most important things. If I can offer something to that, great."
