SHANDONAGH 7'S TOURNAMENT
Next Saturday we are proud to announce the commencement of the Shandonagh 7's tournament. This competition is for the impressive Lynn Memorial Perpetual Cup. This is honour of the memory of two great stalwarts of the club and county: Sean and Padraig Lynn. To those of us old enough to remember their generosity of spirit and character, they were true Gaels in every sense of the word. They are truly missed.
Seven's Football is fast, frenetic football played intensely over two 10 minute halves. It is for the fittest, most competitive footballers fit for competition. An awesome spectacle when played properly.
I appeal to all Gaels to come to our grounds on Saturday to support this occasion and to lend your support to raising awareness of the scourge of suicide in the midst of our community. There is help out there. The day itself promises to be a great day's entertainment and football. The first game throws in at 10.00am and the final will be thrown in about 4.00pm.
Division 1 Minor Football Championship Semi Final
Shandonagh 2-12 Rosemount 1-11
On Saturday last our minor team travelled to Kilbeggan to play Rosemount in the semi final of this years championship. On a perfect day for football the large crowd was treated to an keenly contested game with the result in doubt up until the final whistle. Rosemount began the game brightly and raced into a three point lead. However Shandonagh who gradually came to terms with the pace of the game began to settle and points from Tom Molloy and Alan Hughes reduced the deficit to a point. Rosemount continued to test the Shandonagh defence which was put under severe pressure but still managed to defend resolutely. In an absorbing first thirty minute both sides exchanged scores resulting in a three point lead for Rosemount at half time, 0-9 to 0-6. The second half continued like the first with both teams moving the ball at pace. However Shandonagh gradually began to gain a foothold in midfield and quick, direct ball into the full forward line began to pay dividends. An excellently taken goal by Ciaran Shanley put the Blues ahead for the first time. Further points from Alan Hughes, Daire Conway and a second goal from Tom Molloy left Shandonagh in a commanding position. However Rosemount refused to give in and with five minutes remaining, worked an excellently taken goal. This lead to a nervous final five minutes for Shandonagh who again defended excellently. The final whistle was greeted with memorable scenes as Shandonagh qualified for their first ever final at this grade. All members of the panel must be given credit for their attitude, commitment and work rate and a fantastic performance was capped by fine individual performances by Donal Liddy, Ben Treanor, Daire Conway, Luke Lenehan and Sandiso Ndebele. All panel members are encouraged to attend training over the coming weeks.
On Sunday morning The Downs played Moate All Whites in Shandonagh in the other semi final. In what proved to be a very physical encounter The Downs emerged on top of the score board. Shandonagh will have their work cut out to overcome them in the final, but at the end of the day, it will be one panel of 21 against 21! May the best team win!
