Handball: Kennedy on cloud nine

September 14, 2014

Ready to rumble - Dublin's Eoin Kennedy and Robbie McCarthy (Westmeath).

Dublin's Eoin Kennedy has regained the All-Ireland 60x30 Senior Singles title after a three-year lapse.

In Abbeylara, Co. Longford yesterday, the 35-year-old upset the odds with a tiebreak victory over the champion of the last three years, Westmeath's Robbie McCarthy. It was Kennedy's ninth title and arguably the sweetest.

The signs looked ominous for the veteran St. Brigid's, Blanchardstown clubman when McCarthy overwhelmed him 21-5 in the opening game. But Kennedy dug deep to win the second game 21-17 to force the first tiebreak in the Men's Singles final in nearly a decade.

The momentum was now with the Dubliner who won the third game 21-12 and, in the process, regained his place as softball champion.
