Southern Geals 4-13 St Oliver Plunkett's 3-16
This match, played in Pairc Chiarain Athlone last Wednesday, had all the excitement and skill of the All Ireland final and it too ended in a draw.
Right from the throw in there was a welter of excitement. The Mullingar side hit the upright three times before finally pointing in the fifth minute to open the scoring. Gaels responded with wonderful points from Fionn Dowd and Sean Kilgarriff before a goal and three points had Plunkett's back in the lead. From then it was up and down the field with score after score. The sides drew breath at half-time with the visitors leading by 3-6 to 2-5.
Plunkett's scored two points on the resumption butr gaels responded with a well taken Ciaran Connolly goal and points from Adrian Garvey and Fionn Dowd. The side continued throughout the half to astound the supporters with wonderful skillful hurling of top quality. Gaels defense marshalled by Shane Galvin and Cathal Mc Givern ensured no more goals were scored while Fionn Dowd was scorer in chief with a tally of 3-4, 3-3 from play. Joe Finnucane came on to get a crutial point but it was down to the youthful Sean Dowd to point a 70 meter free with the last puck to earn his side a deserved draw.
