Shandonagh Ladies Lead The Way

Shandonagh 5 -11 Athlone CLG 4 - 4

ON Sunday evening last our junior ladies team took to the pitch in Tyrellspass to take on Athlone in the Junior Championship semi final. Playing against a very strong wind in the first half our girls stuck to their task admirably and cleverly worked the ball into scoring positions. The nett result of these efforts was that we went in at half time up on a score line of 1-5 to Athlone's 1-2. The Shannonsiders were not beaten by any stretch and they came out in the second half and battled bravely against the unrelenting wind to pull 5 points clear twice . To give credit to the Shandonagh Ladies, they never gave up and fought their way back into the game despite a strong Athlone defence who time and time again foiled attacks from our girls forcing them to kick the ball wide on several occasions. Two goals in the 4th quarter of normal time saw our girls edge their way back into contention. With a point between the sides, and moments left on the clock, Edel Conaty stepped up to take a 21 metre free slightly to the right of the goals. She nailed the shot worthy of a Ronan O'Gara penalty to bring the game to extra time. Shandonagh played into the wind for the first period of extra time which yielded 2 points to no score to the Athlone Girls. In the second 10 minutes of extra time Mick Dunne's training really paid dividends when the Shandonagh girls pulled ahead with a further 6 unanswered points.

This is a great achievement for this bunch of girls as they have only been together for 2 years. As a community it is important that we get behind and support them for their final preparations and the performance itself. Best of luck girls. Initial speculation suggests that the final will be played on Saturday week, 30th of August. No doubt this will finalised in the coming days.

Under 8 blitz

The under 8 Blitz on 9th August in Streete was very successful. 22 players turned up. The players were split into two teams and each played two 30 minute matches. Excellent team performances were the order of the day. Thanks to all players, parents & coaches for their help and support.

Under 14 Boys

Our under 14 boys were out against a very mobile Garrycastle team last Thursday night. This was a game that we never really got going in. Unfortunately it finished Garrycastle 5- 14, Shandonagh1-9. Better luck next time lads and remember games are won on the training pitch.
