Westmeath full back Kieran Gavin's club season has been ended by a torn Achilles tendon.

The Mullingar Shamrocks defensive stalwart suffered the injury during the team's 0-12 to 0-9 SFC Section A victory over Castledaly at Cusack Park on Saturday night.

The town side are guaranteed a place in the quarter-final stage of the competition, having won three of their four outings to date.

They defeated The Downs and Maryland in their opening group games but suffered a heavy defeat to holders St Loman's in their third-round assignment.

Gavin posted a Tweet this afternoon to confirm the bad news: "Achilles completely torn. Surgery on Monday next week. I'll be out of action for a few months. Thanks for all the messages." ( @googlyboogly88)

He will miss the Shamrocks' final group match against Killucan on Friday week as well as their involvement in the business end of the senior football championship.
