Westmeath SFC: Garrycastle on the brink

August 10, 2014

Garrycastle supporters will have to do it all over again.
2012 All-Ireland club finalists Garrycastle are on the brink of crashing out of the race for the Flanagan Cup.

The Athlone-based club chalked up their second win of the group stages at Bunbrosna's expense (2-16 to 2-11) yesterday, but need to beat high-flying Coralstown/Kinnegad in their final game and hope that other results go their way to stay in contention. With star player Dessie Dolan injured and Paddy Mulvihill now plying his trade with St. Brigid's in Roscommon, Garrycastle have looked a pale shadow of the side that dominated the Westmeath football landscape between 2001 and 2011, during which time they won six SFC titles.

Surprise-packets Coralstown/Kinnegad made it four wins from four in the same group when they beat St. Malachy's by 2-10 to 0-10 to qualify directly for the semi-finals.

Despite that reversal, St. Malachy's are looking good for a quarter-final place as are Tyrrellspass who defeated Athlone by 3-13 to 0-10. Both teams have three wins each.

In the other group, 2012 champions Mullingar Shamrocks have booked their place in the last-six. They edged out Castledaly by 0-12 to 0-9, but lost county full back Kieran Gavin to a serious looking ankle injury.
