Intermediate Championship result

Caulry 0-9 Shandonagh 0-6

On Saturday night last we made the journey to Moate to take on Caulry in the third round of the 2014 Intermediate Championship. We were under no illusion as to the heights that we needed to bring our game to, as we were taking on the finalists of not one but the last two intermediate championship campaigns. And worthy finalists they were too.

Whilst Caulry started stronger of the two sides on the score board, in truth it was the defences of both sides that were on top. The telling point of the game happened in the 15th minute of the first half when Shandonagh stalwart, Aarron Craig, was dismissed from the field of play on receiving a second yellow card. Nevertheless the boys in blue continued to battle on hard and in the most competitive of games played to date went in at the break down by 2 points on score line of 0-6 to 0-4.

The second half continued in much the same way as the first with both defences on top, punishing less than perfect passes with interceptions and launching counter attacks. It was compelling football, worthy of a final. Shandonagh inched their way back into the game and by the 20th minute of the second half had drawn level on a score line of 0-6 to 0-6. However shortly after this we missed a number of genuine scoring opportunities including a 45. On the resumption of play, Caulry successfully got past our defensive lines to score the first of three unanswered points. Our battle weary boys can hold their heads high however as they battled hard to the very end and never gave up.
