St Josephs club notes

Junior Football Championship
St Josephs 2-11 Delvin 0-14
St Josephs bounced back from recent losses to gather both points on offer from Sundays Junior championship game against Delvin played at sunny Shandonagh to give everyone in the club a welcome boost and an outside chance of making the play offs. Trailing by 0-8 to 0-3 after the opening twenty minutes, we looked to be stuttering along and not making any great headway in this game but four successive points in as many minutes followed by a great individual goal from Wayne Mc Cormack saw St Josephs lead by 1-7 to 0-9 at half time. The opening half saw St Josephs trail early in the game before Jerry Glesson opened our account in the 2nd minute. Indeed Jerry was desperately unlucky in the following attack not to goal following an instinctive back heel which went narrowly wide. Two points from Niall Moran followed in the opening twenty minutes as Delvin enjoyed their best spell to lead by five at that stage and indeed only for some inspired goalkeeping by Andrew Meares, the margin could well have been more. But that burst of scores by St Josephs changed the direction of the game and to lead at the break was indeed a boost. The second half saw St Josephs continue as prior to the break with points from Niall Moran and Mark Mc Cormack to put us 1-9 to 0-9 in front by the 4th minute of the half. Our second goal came in the 7th minute when a sweeping move freed up Brian Killian who sent a great shot to the back of the Delvin net to stretch out our lead to six points. Two further points finished our account by the 17th minute of the half as we led by 2-11 to 0-11 at that stage. As players tired in the final ten minutes, we retreated somewhat and had a few hairy moments before closing of the match to win by a margin of three at the finish.
