Westmeath GAA Notes

July 28, 2014
Senior Football Championship:
It was another busy weekend for the football clubs as another full round of championship fixtures covering Senior,Intermediate and Junior Championships took place. At Senior level the action saw all twelve clubs square up in a number of interesting fixtures which threw up some fascinating results. The stand out fixture in Section A was the meeting of St Lomans Mullingar against their long time town rivals Mullingar Shamrocks. Indeed a large attendance graced Cusack Park on Sunday evening in anticipation of a tightly contested encounter. But it turned out to be the exact opposite as reigning champions St Lomans cruised to a comprehensive 2-12 to 0-4 win over a very out of sorts Shamrocks side. The opening game on Sunday evening in Cusack Park saw The Downs gain a 1-12 to 1-6 win over Maryland while Killucan had a point to spare over Castledaly at Shandonagh to win by 1-6 to 0-8. Following the weekend action in Section B, St Malachys and Coralstown Kinnegad continue to set the pace as both sides remain unbeaten after three rounds. St Malachys had a 2-13 to 2-06 win over Athlone in Tang on Sunday while Coralstown Kinnegad were six points ahead of Bunbrosna at Cusack Park on Saturday evening as they won by 1-9 to 0-6. Garrycastle who have been the dominant team in club football over the past decade seem in bother at this stage as they fell to their second successive defeat when Tyrrellspass had a four point margin in hand in their 1-12 to 1-08 win which was also on Saturday in Cusack Park.

Intermediate Football Championship:
The middle tier of club football is always most enjoyable as the majority of teams at Intermediate level are often an even match for each other so the games are nearly always well contested. In Section A,Rosemount set the pace after three rounds with full points followed by Tang on 5 points and Ballymore on four points. Rosemount grabbed four goals in their 4-4 to 0-8 win over Ballynacrgy while Tang were 1-18 to 1-10 winners over CFCW. Ballymore had three points in hand when they defeated Ballinagore by 1-13 to 1-10. Caulry lead the pack in Section B on six points but they had to work very hard to remain unbeaten as they edged out Shandonagh by 0-9 to 0-6. Milltownpass won their derby with St Marys Rochfortbridge by 1-12 to 1-7 while Tubberlair were far too strong for Mullingar Shamrocks as they won by 1-16 to 0-2. At this stage, Rosemount & Caulry are in pole position for semi final berths while the quarter final spots are wide open in both divisions. At the bottom of divisions Ballynacargy,Ballinagore,St Marys Rochfortbridge and Mullingar Shamrocks will all have to work hard to lift themselves out of relegation danger in the remaining two rounds.

Junior Football Championship:
With Table Toppers Moate All Whites having a bye last weekend, it was an opportunity for the chasing teams to make ground in the race for qualifications spots from Section A. Kilbeggan Shamrocks and Milltown clashed in the stand out fixture from this grade and it was Shamrocks who have shown good form recently won by 2-14 to 1-08 on Friday evening. Multyfarnham continue to make progress as they aim to make the knock out stages when defeating Ballycomoyle by 0-15 to 0-7 remaining third in the table with St Pauls occupying the fourth spot following their 4-15 to 2-4 win over Loughnavalley. The remaining game saw St Josephs overcome Delvin by 2-11 to 0-14. At this stage Moate All Whites & Kilbeggan Shamrocks look certain for two semi final spots but the two remaining places are up for grabs between Multyfarnham,St Pauls and Milltown. In section B St Lomans Mullingar and Garrycastle remain on course for the two knock out spots as they remain undefeated. St Lomans Mullingar were 4-19 to 4-7 winners over Killucan while Garrycastle were 1-15 to 1-9 victors over Tubberclair. Caulry had a 4-13 to 0-13 win over Coralstown Kinnegad and remain third in Section B.
