Athlone U14 Girls - Div 2 League Champions 2014

Athlone U14 girls completed their final league match of the year when they totally outclassed Mullingar Shamrock's in Pairc Chiarain on Monday evening 21st July. They went through the league undefeated and are now the U14 Division 2 League Champions for 2014. These girls had faced Mullingar earlier this year in a championship match and were very fortunate to escape with a two point victory after coming form 11 points down at half time. This time it was a different story as Athlone started the game in brilliant fashion and scored at will with the ball hardly crossing the half way line. Niamh McGann, Karla McManus, Grace Halligan, Kelly Brill, Brionna Geoghegan and Nadia Molloy all scored in the first half to leave the score at the break at 9-6 to 0-0.

The second half continued as the first had ended with further scores from Karla, Brionna, Kelly, Grace as well as two goals from Emily O'Callaghan. Mullingar did show some of their qualities in the second half and managed 2-4 in total. The final score was Athlone 17-10 Mullingar 2-4. It was great to see all 24 girls getting a game and all played really well. Even allowing for the fact that Mullingar were missing a few players this was a fantastic performance from the girls. Their passing, movement and work rate was great to see and it continues what has been a super year. They are now the Feile shield champions and league champions.

They are undefeated in the championship with one more game to play. If they continue to train as they have and in particular continue with their great attitude and willingness to improve themselves they will go a long way. Well done and congratulations to all concerned especially Mentors Seamus Mitchell and Damien McIntyre.

U10 Boys Clann na nGael Tournament
Athlone v St. Dominics
Athlone U10s visited St Dominic's in the third round of the Tormeys Clann na nGael tournament on Saturday last and came away with a share of the spoils, winning one and losing one. Our U9 team started the game in very impressively and raced to a four point lead early on, a lead that they never surrendered as they ran out winners against a gallant St Dominic's side. The under 10 match was a case of role reversal with the Athlone lads slow out of the blocks and the hosts took full advantage to lead by seven at the interval. However, our lads responded very well in the second half and were unfortunate to come up one point short in the end. Great credit to our lads for battling hard in the second half.

For the record, the Athlone panel were: Conor Devins, Rian Dully, Pierce Edmundson, Ryan Fallon, Luke Farrell, Jack Gavin, Eoin Hardiman, Clinton Imade, Johnny Martin, Donagh McCormack, Dano McMonagle, Owen McNamara, Kian Mitchell, Luke O'Connell, Daniel Omukoro, Liam Rowan, Ian Rushe, Jason Rushe, Alan Sweeney, Niall Tallon and Adam Temple.
