Southern Gaels Hurling Club Notes
July 14, 2014
Intermediate Championship
Raharney 2-11 Southern Gaels 1-11
Southern Gaels suffered a three point defeat to Raharney last Tuesday in a game played in Ballymore.
They conceded 2-5 in the opening ten minutes and despite some excellent hurling for the remainder of the match couldn't make up for the poor start. Daniel Riggs opened the scoring with a Raharney point and followed with a goal on two minutes as the Athlone defense failed to clear a ball. Raharney added a further goal and four points before Tony O'Keeffe opened the scoring for Gaels with a well taken point. He added a second from a free as Southern Gaels settled to their task. Riggs added a point from play for Raharney before Gaels stormed back into the game with four points on the trot. Their defense was now more assured with Kieran Duncan and Donal Hurley showing great touches. Padraig Connaughton added two points for Raharney and wing back Sean Carey finished the half with a Southern Gaels point leaving the score 2-8 to 0-7 for the north Westmeath side.
Gaels were a lot more composed in the second half and restricted Raharney to one point from play and two 65's. They scored 1-4 themselves and had a few narrow misses that left the game in doubt right up to the final whistle. M.J. Kelly, Dermot Carey, with a goal, and Tony O'Keeffe were to the fore in their efforts. Sean Kilgarriff was superb at center-field and Ronan Farrell did good work at center-forward.
They play Brownstown on Tuesday the 15th and this a must win game if they are to progress in the championship. However, there were a lot of positives from this game and the side are playing some great hurling.
