Brian Hanley has stepped down as Westmeath senior and U21 hurling manager.
The news comes as no surprise after a tumultuous third full season at the helm for the Athenry native, which culminated in last Wednesday night's heart-breaking Leinster U21HC semi-final loss to Dublin.
Speaking afterwards, Hanley - who had come under pressure to resign after Westmeath narrowly avoided relegation from Division 2A of the Allianz League earlier this year - wasn't hopeful of being handed another term.
"There have been too many knives in my back for the last six months. I wouldn't think that I'll be wanted. We could do no more as a unit for the last three years," he said.
The Galway man, who was initially appointed as interim manager following Kevin Martin's resignation in the spring of 2011, released the following statement today: "I wish to confirm as of Wednesday evening last that I am standing down as Westmeath senior and U21 hurling manager after three-and-a-quarter years in charge.
"I would like to thank everyone who has worked with me and formed part of my management team during this period and most of all the players. Also, I would like to thank the county and hurling board for their full support of me and wish them and Westmeath continued success on the field.
"I really hope that they can build on the strong foundations that are now laid in place and I fully expect Westmeath to gain promotion in the league next year followed by round-robin success (in Leinster). Iarmhi Abú."
A county board statement read: "Westmeath GAA would like to thank Brian for his time, commitment and dedication to the promotion of hurling since 2011.
"He has strived to improve the standing of the game within the county and raise the profile of Westmeath's standing at national level during his time here. Brian is wished the very best in all his future endeavours."
Martin Fogarty, who was appointed coach to the Westmeath hurlers in April after a hugely successful spell as Brian Cody's right-hand man in Kilkenny, is the early favourite to replace Hanley.
