COVID-19

Our club has registered for the new community support helpline organised by Westmeath Co Co to assist citizens during Covid-19 restrictions. The helpline number is 1800 805816 and we encourage any members of our community who are in need of assistance to please use it. A number of club members are already registered and any club members who want to help are asked to contact our club secretary, Mark King, or to message us directly on Facebook. Your eircode is required so that helpline operators can organise volunteer assistance closest to those in need. We want to thank everybody working in frontline services, whether in healthcare or other essential services that remain open, for their tremendous commitment and resolve in these trying times.

Easter Week

This Easter week is going to be like no other in living memory. On Palm Sunday, Palm blessed by Fr Barry was left at the Crib window in the village. You are welcome to collect a piece for yourself and your neighbours who may be in isolation. Please remember your social distancing when collecting. Let us spare a thought for our local parish priest, Fr Barry, who is also on the frontline and who continues to engage with his parishioners as best as possible. With mass now being said with no congregations present, it is difficult and indeed it can be a lonely time for our clergy. Easter ceremonies are available as follows:

Holy Thursday

18:30 on Parish Radio 101.6FM; 16:40 on RTE1 from Mullingar Cathedral.

Good Friday

18:00 Passion on Parish Radio; 21:00 Stations on Parish Radio; 15:00 Liturgy on RTE1 from Mullingar Cathedral.

Easter Saturday

18:30 Vigil Mass on Parish Radio; 22:00 Mass on RTE2 from Mullingar Cathedral.

Easter Sunday

10:00 Mass on Parish Radio; 10:00 Mass on RTE1.

Ag Feachaint Siar

This weeks look back at old club notes takes us back to 11th June 1988 with two match reports. First up a Junior B championship report:

Ballinagore 2-09  Ballymore 2-07

On an evening when conditions were terrible, both teams served up a very good, entertaining Junior B championship game. An outstanding performance by the County U21 and Ballinagore Intermediate goalkeeper, Stephen Brudell, proved the difference between the two teams. While in the first fifteen minutes Ballymore appeared the stronger team, Ballinagore notched up one goal and one point. The Ballinagore backs were struggling and conceded two goals and two points before half time. In the second half, Ballinagore half backs Rory O'Brien, Pat Seery and Tony Robinson cleared everything that came their way. Our full back, Joe Leonard, had to leave the field through injury with ten minutes remaining and his absense put real pressure on our backs. The introduction of Finian O'Brien and Kevin Deegan absorbed this pressure and the midfield duo of Sean Robinson and John Deegan, after a shaky start, really proved their worth. Overall this was a fine performance by the Junior B team and in the absense of some of our regular players, it was great to see our younger players like Jarlath Mahon, Jimmy Maloney and Declan Carey showing potential and ability. Thanks to the referee Sean Sheridan and to Frank Dillon from Ballymore for his kind words.

Feis Cup Replay

Ballinagore 0-07  Castledaly 0-06

On Sunday evening last our Intermediate team had a good win by the narrowest of margins over Castledaly. The game got off to a lively start with Castledaly scoring twice in the first five minutes. Ballinagore struggled to settle but points from Cristoir Ennis and John Deegan levelled the scores midway through the first half. At half time Castledaly led by 0-04 to 0-03. The introduction of Gerry Linnane to the forward line proved a big boost to Ballinagore. Linnane and Rory O'Brien won a lot of possession but despite some fine forward movement we squandered a lot of chances. Indeed Ballinagore managed eight wides from inside thrity yards in the first fifteen minutes of the second half. Paul Baker had a fine game at centre forward and scored two points after a series of good passes. John Pidgeon showed some of his old flair and was well assisted by the whole hearted Sean Robinson. The Castledaly forwards always looked dangerous with their full forward in particular showing some nice touches. Ken Dolan had a great game at centre back and together with Tony Robinson and John Durkan, they curbed the flow of ball from the Castledaly midfield. Stephen Brudell showed safe handling in goals, while Pat O'Connor and Sean Claffey were solid at the back. It was great to see good support for the team in Castletown and our thanks to them.
