Feile Rematch

Southern Gaels 0-2     Mayfield, Cork 2-5

Southern Gaels were hosted at last year's Feile na nGael by Mayfield and the Athlone club repaid the occasion last weekend by inviting the Cork youngsters to Athlone. Despite the horrendous weather both sides turned out in Pairc Chiaráin for an Under 15 match. The wind, rain and mucky conditions did not deter the talented players as they displayed an array of skills. The teams played  four periods of ten minutes each to help battle the conditions. Mayfield playing with the wind dominated the early proceedings scoring three points to Gaels one. The second period saw Gaels wind assisted but neither side added to the score. Mayfield stretched their lead in the third quarter with two goals and a brace of points. The Athlone side managed a second point in the final quarter but had to give way to a better balanced Cork outfit. Well done to both sides on their efforts.

The Cork lads were with their host families for Saturday and there were some fun and games for all in Athlone GAA at Pairc Chiaráin later that night.

The adult members of both clubs also frequented Pairc Chiarain later and a great night was had by all. Gearóid Ó Dubhair organised a great Karaoke session that was highly entertaining.

On Sunday both teams attended the National Hurling League game between Westmeath and Cork in Cusack Park. They formed a guard of honour to welcome both sides to the field of play.

Cork went on to win the match by a narrow margin as Westmeath gave a great display.
