Under 20 Final 17 November 2019

Clonkill  -v- Castletown Geoghegan

Result : 2:11 to 1:15

Our Under 20 Final was played in Brownstown GAA Grounds on the 17th November 2019.

It was the same pairing as was for the Senior Hurling Final which was played in October and both teams were looking for a win.

Castletown were the team who got off to the better start and with approximately 15 minutes gone in the game the score was 1:4 Castletown Geoghegan to 1 point to Clonkill.

Clonkill registered another three points before the stroke of half time between the 22nd and 27th minute to leave the score line at half time read: Castletown Geoghegan 1:6 to Clonkill 4 points.

Castletown Geoghegan scored their second goal in the opening 10 minutes of the first half but 3 fine points from Daire McLaughlin kept us in the fight to retain the Under 20 Championship Crown.

Throughout the game Clonkill battled all over the field, they worked hard for their scores and had some fine passages of link up play.

Mickey McGrath our team Captain was very solid at full back and really played a Captains role leading by example despite being under pressure continuously.

Oisin Dowdall had an excellent game in the half back line.

Ciaran Nolan really began to shine when he was moved to the midfield position and continued to push forward with the ball and put the pressure on the Castletown backs.

Joe Moran and Adam Conneely had a fine hour in the forward line and their continuous hard work, never say die attitude left the Castletown Geoghegan back line with plenty to do.

Our goal came late in the second half goal.

Johnathan Lynam delivered a good pass to Daire McLaughlin who was in a great position.  Daire ran onto ball and had perfect pick up, he struck the ball and headed straight into the back of night . The crowd irrupted we had level with Castletown Geoghegan and time was just about up.

You could nearly feel the relief around but there was one more twist in the story line, with about 1 minute approx. gone in added time, of the second half Joe Moran again was involved in the play where he won the ball around the midfield area, passed the ball to Johnathan Lynam.   Johnathan struck this ball with composure and confidence and its sailed very nicely between the post.

We were ahead by just the minimum and were we happy to hear the full-time whistle.

Well done to the Panel of Players and to the Management team of Fergal Fagan, Larry Donoghue and Paul Kellaghan

Special word of thanks to Frank Aughey who took some training sessions with the lads and prepared them so well.

Thank you to Brownstown Hurling Club for the fine facilities that were available on the day and to Jimmy Greville and his officials
