Southern Gaels club notes

AGM Celebrates Great Year

The positivity was palpable last Friday night at the Southern Gaels AGM as the year’s great work was recalled with fondness and pride from Academy up to the senior squad. All agreed that the club is developing as planned, if not ahead of schedule, in all areas and that a super year was topped off with an unexpected bonus of the U16 victory. Frank Lee coordinated the meeting in his usual professional manner delivering a comprehensive report detailing the club activities and achievements. Martin Geary gave another inspirational chairperson’s report not only assessing his stewardship of the club in 2019 but also sending out a clarion call for each member to do one thing of the club in 2020 to promote and build the club to greater things. Reports from committee members and all age group mentors were well received and detailed just how much work has been done over the past twelve months. Undoubtedly, the greatest praise was lavished on the parents of our players who keep the show on the road, literally! Their contribution was continually referred to and it is hoped that this will continue into the future. Thanks to all who made and make Southern Gaels the biggest, small hurling club in the country – Gaels Abú!

SG Over 35s Represent Westmeath

Well done to Tony O’Keeffe, Patrick Flynn and Kieran McCarthy who represented the club at county level in last Saturday’s Over 35s Social Hurling Blitz held in the GAA National Development Centre in Abbotstown. The lads joined 8 others from Westmeath for a day of non-competitive hurling designed to encourage more senior players to keep playing. Of course, our representatives were well primed as they are consistent players in Southern Gaels own over 35 hurling, Rise Up and Hurl, which is still running after four years and gathering new members all the time. If you wish to join this group do not hesitate to get in contact. You don’t have to be a member of the club to play.

Sunday Sessions Drawing High Numbers

The Southern Gaels winter programme is well and truly up and hurling! Our U10s and U12s are lining out in the brand new astroturf in the Gaelscoil every Sunday from 3-4pm and numbers have been great. This is a great opportunity for anyone who would like to give hurling a go as it is a very informal puck around. Get in touch with the club via Facebook if you would like some more information.

Our U14s and U16s/17s are also getting in some winter workouts in the Gaelscoil hall with circuit training and fun skill games. Numbers are great and it’s perfect on a Sunday afternoon when all other sports have been done and dusted over the weekend.

Marist Hall Hurling for Academy and U8s

Every Tuesday for the next few weeks our Academy and U8s will fill the Marist Hall with hurling as part of their winter programme. There are great numbers turning out for this as always and thanks to the parents for coming along. This is a great opportunity for new players to give hurling a try so get in touch for details.
