Momentum key for Cooney

Westmeath manager Jack Cooney feels that the momentum they have built up in the qualifiers must stand to them for their next task this weekend.

For the third round running, Westmeath will face Munster opposition in the qualifiers, but this will be their toughest test yet as they prepare to take on Clare.

Once again, the Midlanders will have home advantage and Cooney feels that if his charges can match Clare’s intensity, then the rest should take care of itself.

“We played two Division four teams in the previous rounds. Clare are a division two team, so we are expecting the intensity to be doubled on Saturday,” Cooney told the Westmeath Independent.

“We’re going to have to match Clare with the same intensity. We can’t afford to allow our concentration levels dip for the 70 minutes.

“We’re at a stage in the championship now where if your standards or concentration levels dip for even five minutes over the course of the game, then you will be punished.

“Our overall performance will have to improve for Saturday’s contest. It’s a quick turn around but I think that it’s not a major issue when you’re winning.”
