Athlone and former Westmeath forward Mickey Greene is set for a transfer to neighbours and rivals Garrycastle.

The news come as a big blow to the Athlone club who had made a revival in the senior championship in recent years.

Last year, they reached the quarterfinal where they were beaten by Garrycastle; ironically it was a game that Greene was sent off in and proved to be his last outing for the blue and white hoops.

The Cork native is a brother in law of Garrycastle stalwarts Dessie and Gary Dolan (Garrycastle manager), but the move still comes as somewhat of a surprise.
