Southern Gaels Club Notes

Call to Mentor’s Meeting Thursday

This Thursday will see the mentors of the juvenile squads meet to plan this year’s campaign. With the club growing there is greater demand on planning and preparing than ever before especially as we strive to build on our achievements at U14 and U16 levels. These grades will be a major focus for the club this year as they lead our development to have twenty plus hurlers at every level within the next few years. It is very important that all interested mentors attend this meeting in Páirc Chiaráin at 9pm to 10pm and, needless to say, if anyone is inclined to enhance their coaching skills and get involved further with the club, they are more than welcome. Many hands make light work and with the club growing all help is greatly appreciated and badly needed! Ask not what your club can do for you, ask what you can do for your club!

Gaels Two Feature for Westmeath Minors

Well done to Cian McCarthy and Tomak Idowski who featured for the Westmeath minors against Antrim last Sunday in O’Donnell Park, Belfast. Both got quality game time with the former scoring a lovely point from his wing forward position. Tomak was solid in his corner back position and although the team fell short of a win the second half of the match showed great performance. The team, led by our own Tony O’Keeffe, finished the day with a trip to Corrigan Park to see the Westmeath seniors beat the home side in a great challenge. Hopefully, all our four representatives on the minor team will follow this with senior team glory in the not too distant future! Well done to all involved.

Marist Hurling for U8s and U6s Returns

Hurling for the U8s and U6s returns next Tuesday, February 26th in the Marist Hall from 6.30 to 7.30 after a well-earned break for the winter. Time to blow off the cobwebs and get pucking ball. New members always welcome and hurleys and helmets will be provided for the indoor sessions. Get in touch via our Facebook page if you would like any further details.

Marist Hurlers to face St Mel’s Next Wednesday

Best of luck to the Marist Hurlers, many of whom are Southern Gaels stalwarts, in their match verses St. Mel’s next Wednesday in the opening match Top Oil North Leinster Post Primary Juvenile Hurling competition. The match is an away fixture and throw-in is set for 1.00pm. Thanks to all those who are promoting hurling in the school as it complements the work being done in the club to a great extent.

SG Players in Westmeath Development Squads

Great to see our Southern Gaels players being included in the Westmeath Development Squad training sessions every Monday night over in St. Loman’s. At U14 level we have Dano McMonigle, Calum Devaney and Johnny Martin, Cian Geary features at U15s while Cian McCarthy appears for the U16s. Well done lads, ye do us proud for both club and county! Gaels Abú!
