Quaid: Work rate is our number one

Westmeath manager Joe Quaid feels that the players are getting used to the system the management team have introduced.

The Lake County looked impressive against an out of sorts Meath side in last weekend’s Kehoe Cup semi-final, even though Quaid stressed that there is plenty of room for improvement.

The former Limerick goalkeeper told the Westmeath Examiner that retaining possession and working for each other will be the priority this year.

“Work rate is our number one, it’s as simple as that,” stated Quaid. “We know Westmeath have excellent hurlers. But if you don’t have the ball, it doesn’t matter how good a hurler you are, the only way to get the ball is hard work.”

He added: “We still have a lot of players to come back and we have lads doing exams, but we want lads when they come back to have to push their way to get on the 26 number one, and then get on the starting 15. That’s the type of competition we want.

“It’s the second week of January, there’s nothing to be shouting or roaring about. It’s going well so far, but the real business starts this day two weeks when we start the league.

“We have Antrim next weekend and that will be a tough battle. We will be going out to win and it will be further preparation for the league.”
