Well done Scór Quiz Winners

Southern Gaels were well represented last Friday night at the Westmeath Scór Quiz in Streamstown and were unlucky to come up short on winning the well-attended event by two points. However, second place is a great achievement so well done to Eoin McCarthy, Rory Kilgariff, Cian McCarthy and Cian Ó Súilleabháin for representing the club both on and off the field of play. Well done also to the team of the future who participated including Caoimhe McCarthy, Gearóid McCarthy, Ryan Ó Súilleabháin and Ruairí Ó Duibhir. It was their first time participating and they were by far the youngest team there and still managed to score admirably acquiring 37 points – only twenty off the winning score. Watch this space, they’ll be back! Thanks to Cormac Ó súilleabháin and Claire McCarthy for arranging the club’s participation and for travelling – great to start the year with a medal or four!

Congrats to CCC Winners

The inaugural Southern Gaels Christmas Catching Challenge was a great success and it was with great excitement the winners were announced during the week. Congratulations to the following who won at their age levels: U8: Cillian Lee (8), U10: Dara Geary (20), U11: Kyle Mahon (34), U12: Cillian Geary (45), U13: Calum Devaney (35), U14: Cian Geary (56). The scores beside their names represent the amount of catches they made in one minute from a distance of 2 metres. With skills of this calibre it is no wonder that already 2019 looks like it could be a special one for the club. Check out a great video showing snippets of some of the entries on our website. Thanks to our own Spielberg, Martin Geary for putting it together.

New Year New You

With things coming back to normal after the festive season no doubt thoughts begin to focus on losing those extra pounds acquired magically during the Christmas. Why not get hurling for the new year. The club is always looking for new members young and not as young as they used to be but still eager! From U6 to U60 there’s a hurling opportunity for you in Southern Gaels. Get in contact and give it a go!

Best of Luck to New Committee

Best wishes to our incoming committee who have started their term this week. New chairman Martin Geary will lead an eager team fresh with enthusiasm and ideas as we plan for this year and well beyond 2020! Thanks to all the new members and those who continue to serve the club behind the scenes. Gaels Abú in 2019!

Westmeath Gaeltacht Scholarships up for Grabs

It's that time of year again to consider the Summer holidays, craic agus a leithéid for your teenager. Westmeath are offering Gaeltacht Scholarships to the most fluent of our Gaelgeoirí in the county and hopefully our club can bag one.

In 2018, our own Under 14 southern Gael, Oisín Flynn won one of the coveted scholarships and off he went to Achill for a few weeks – the other lads were dead jealous, especially with some of the stories he came back with. If you too, wish to be like Oisín and get away for the summer, why not try the Gaeltacht scholarship route. You have to submit an application form, with a cúpla focal about yourself and why you'd like to go to the Gaeltacht. Application Forms will be loaded onto our social media this week to download and then get your pens burning with some Gaeilge to give you one of the best summers to remember. All forms should be returned by Friday 8th February 2019.  Interviews will be held in the first week of March 2019 and applicants will be informed of their interview results by email or by text. Who knows - it could really change your summer!
